Tweaking Facebook Ads

Simply going with the default settings isn't always the best - as mentioned by this webinar I viewed today. OK, is there anyone who knows better settings? Who has played around with this stuff?

I do not have a lot of experiencer with facebook ads. I have used facebook ads twice. One of my ads promoted my Amazon book and another promoted my facebook page. I did get a lot of traffic on my book, however, the sale was so small that I did not recover my investment. However, I did benefit by advertising my page.
