OK, well, Facebook's a breeze - now that I had my debt removed - and I can utilize their ad system, but Twitter is still a mystery. Anyway, I do know that the secret is to reach influencers - but how? You have to pay some third-party cause Twitter has no ad system in place.

If I recall, Twitter has promoted tweets which aren't quite ads, but can have a similar effect.
They have to make money somehow.

For twitter, you do not need to spend money, make sure you #tag you tweets and communicate and comment on others tweets that is relevant to your niche,
this is a sure guide to promoting your twitter account and getting followers, once you build it up you will eventually will get click through but you have to sustain and interest so people keep viewing your tweets.
Remember some tweets last about 10-15 seconds if some people have popular twitter accounts so making sure your tweet regular will sustain click throughs and retweets.

Using tweetdeck can help minimize the workflow so it doesn't feel like a full time job which it really isn't, i tweet few times a day and load tweetdeck with content scheduled to times of the day my readers will potentially see the tweets 🙂
