Do you recommend using Twitter to promote your site (be it a forum or a blog)? I was thinking of doing it for my forum, but I was wondering how useful it would actually be. Thoughts?

I do use Twitter only for advertisement purposes, I really don't use it all that much.

I am completely not sure, honestly speaking. I only use my Twitter for personal usage, to have fun with friends. So if I were to use it for advertising, I don't think it will work... I tried once and it kind of failed, but I might have given up too early, LOL~

As long as you have time and dedication to always update the Twitter, I think it can work. 🙂

I use my personal Twitter for my friends, too. I meant creating a separate one just for a specific forum.

In my case, I meant that since I'm used to tweeting for personal usage, the idea of creating new account and use it to advertise my website is kind of strange for me. That I had tried it before, and failed since I couldn't do it regularly. ^^;

Social marketing is the best tool you can use other than SEO to promote your website. Really, it is a must if you want to get visitors.

That's what I thought. Thanks! 🙂

Every social media outlet should be explored as a way of gaining traffic to your websites. It is a social world these days, and webmasters will have to adapt or they risk losing tons of potential traffic. Here is how I like to think about it. Why not? Why not use Twitter to possibly gain traffic? There really is no downside, except time wasted.

I agree with John, Social media is a big part of today's internet culture and millions if not billions of people use it and other sites like it. Do your research on what people do to gain traffic using twitter and start with that, then improvise and create your own techniques.

I think advertising on your Twitter page could do some use because you'd get people registered but it'd probably just be a bunch of friends you have, so it wouldn't be as effective as just modern-day advertising. 😛

I have a personal account but also have a Forum account. All 3 staff promote via Twitter, and on a Saturday when the radio show is on me and the DJ go abit crazy for 3 hours a really get stuck in promoting and tagging the promotive tweets.

It would only help you get members if you had a lot of followers.

^ Doesn't matter too much if you use tags. I try and cram as many tags in as possible.

It's good for keeping your members up to date if the site goes down.

We find twitter is a great way of communicating with our users (and potential users!) and making new connections. It is our second highest referral source. Your tweets can reach a lot of people, instantly. Even if you do not have many followers (you have to start somewhere), you may get 'retweeted' by someone who has literally millions of followers who will see the tweet.

And a low number of followers is not necessarily a bad thing (provided they are a valuable connections).

We would recommending this and other similar articles http://www.twitip.com/10-tips-to-be-eff ... n-twitter/

If you have followers, then yes it's a great tool to use. It helps bring in traffic to new articles, blog posts, forum posts and to make your followers alert of new changes. Not everyone always comes back to the site everyday, having a post on twitter where they follow you could make them visit the site that day or even every day.
