So does anyone use Twitter to promote their forum and how do they feel about it?

Is it worth while? Does it help promote your site?

Do you feel that it has any negatives or issues?

It doesn't hurt to try and promote your forum on twitter, but in my opinion it is pointless for small/new communities unless you have a lot of twitter followers already. Think about it. You can post a million tweets to adverise your forum, but who is gonna see the tweet ads if you don't have any followers? Now you have to also advertise your twitter to gain followers. So you're doing twice the work.

If you have a twitter account with a lot of followers already then it is definitely useful.

I don't use Twitter to promote my sites anymore. There's hardly anyone there anymore. Everyone uses it for stupid status updates these days.

I do notice that when a link is posted, theres almost instant spider activity.

Like Baxter said, there isn't any issue with trying something new or different than usual. You may or may not get members/visitors, but that's pretty much the same with everything else, eg. signing up to FP. There is no guarantee that FP can provide members (ie. long term, not packages/exchanges), or posts, but you tried it and you may have gotten members or not.

For me, I do have a decent amount of followers (follower to following ratio) so I do see results, ie. not spiders/bots (spiders/bots don't register as unique or even affect my Google Analytics). If you can get a high followerbase, then sure you can see results.

If you have a lot of followers/following then it can help. But it helps the most if your followers/following are interested in the genre of your forum.

Fair point, well taken. Has anyone ued any of the twee ad on things, that autmoate your followers?

No, I don't use the automatic follower programs/software. Eventually, they will most likely unfollow you, and they probably don't even care about your niche. Note that the people who use them are just like you; they want followers, so if you are not interested in the generated followers, then they are probably not interested in yours.

I use twitter. I don't spend my time getting followers. I use auto follow trade and an auto twitter poster to get some traffic for my site but that's all you get: Traffic. I forgot to say: Bot traffic.

I'm sorry to say that most, if not all, of these guests are bots/spiders. Chances are they are not real people.

I have used twitter in the past, but in my opinion, it's just downright pointless, to be honest. If anything, all we got out of the promotion were bots, and those few legitament members that were following us were already members on the forum to begin with! Kind of pointless for a legit member when he can just follow us using our Announcement section or through updates we do in promotion sites or whatever.

Spiders are still useul though in some respects, but i have noticed you get very little members from it.

I don't do it anymore. Twitterfeed does it. I include a link to my site in my profile. And sometimes mention it if someone needs help or something.

It really converts if you get people to join, some do, especially if they're following you.
