I think HTML websites can be easier to make money with since all you need is an HTML template which you can get for free on Free HTML Template sites to build your site with Dreamweaver or Frontpage website editor or even Notepad text editor, and you do not have to learn about PHP, JavaScript, CSS (if you are fine with the page design, and look of your template, MySQL databases, Site speed + Traffic load on server 'as much', storage space on server since most HTML files are only a few KB in size, and it is generally easier to position ads, and affiliate links in HTML templates to the best positions where they can get noticed compared to editing PHP files for locations like header, content, and footer for blogs and forums.

HTML sites are also easier to upload to your web server, and publish online with Dreamweaver, or an FTP client like Filezilla.

But, HTML websites can sometimes be boring to build, and add content to since there are no plug-ins, and fast way of publishing content like a blog which has a post editor.

Some people also claim that people who visit blogs are more interested in reading news then clicking on Ads and affiliate links to buy products compared to websites which are mainly used to talk about and promote a certain type of product like antivirus, disk cleanup software, magazine subscriptions, and books.

Although, using a blog, CMS, and forum may be easier if you have a ton of articles to post on it, and you're better at writing and creating a community of readers in a few months or years then making a HTML website with a lot of articles.

Depends what we're talking about.

Site categories which make the most money from ads, or website designs/coding techniques.

If we're talking about categories than it's easily the category that is 4 letters, starts with P, ends with an N and has an O and an R in it, use your imagination.

Obviously didn't type it due to FP's strict rules on 'inappropriate content'.

I was mainly talking about website designs/coding techniques, or technology like HTML+CSS, PHP+MySQL(Blogs, forums, CMS), or Adobe Flash sites.

You don't really make money from ads based on the design or the coding language of the site, it's the overall idea of the site that makes money, people pay based on content not on design/coding.

I don't see how that has any relevance to people click ads at all, other than forums being poor choices if you're hoping to make money from ads.

If you are not selling a real product or service then you're not going to make a fortune from click ads. Now if you are site that sells specific merchandise or ad space that targets a unique audience then you have potential to earn. I'll use my site as an example, IAAM has its own shop I make more from T-shirts and Coffee mugs than I do from the banner ads. Now for phpBBC we have click ads via adBrite and premium ad space that is For Pay Only. The rest are member ad placement services much like that of FP. I make more from the For Pay Only placements then the click ads. Click ads cover the annual fee for both sites the For Pay Only is extra.

Obtaining those For Pay ads is not easy most are not from members of the site, you have to contact companies and show them why putting an ad on your site is a benefit to them. Several firms for us have been willing to spend $15/month for an ad they normally pay $300 plus for elsewhere. It's all in how you market yourself and the site.

Good Luck!

HTML+CSS sites can load a little faster then a blog, forum, or CMS, so fewer 'very' impatient visitors with slow dial-up internet connection might view the ads (possibly, click them if they are interested in the ad) on a small file sized HTML website which is only a few KBs or more in size vs. a slightly slower loading forum, blog, CMS, and flash site which is 500KB in size or more in size which load a few seconds slower on the same web server, and dial-up connections...

A small file sized HTML+CSS based site is also more friendly for dial-up and mobile phone users with slower internet speed, so they might visit back more often if the site loads fast, and the content is useful for them.

I think content based Flash websites (not including flash game websites) with a lot of big flash files, and scripts are also harder to make money with ads since people with slower connections might just hit the back button, and go to another site which has no loading bar to enter the website...

I also read search engines sometimes rank faster loading website with good unique content higher in search rankings then website with content which is just as good, but a slow loading site. More search traffic usually means higher potential for earnings.

I dont think it really matters as long as the content is good

Content is king....not many people have slow dial-up anymore...and if they do, than that sucks for them. As far as you saying they rank them higher if they are fast loading....Do you really think google/bing uses dialup to for their crawlers....A Forum can load in as little as .0something seconds if it is not stocked full of ads/images/100 different forums areas.

Yes html will load faster because it doesn't do anything with server sided scripting...Yes with plain HTML you can't have half as much of a site....Depending on what you are wanting to do with it...You can have a forum about Weight lifting and put up ads...those will make money, Yet if you have just plain HTML site about it...users can't interact and mostly see it as a scam or just a sales gimmick....

A HTML+CSS site send HTML and CSS content to browser, yes. But even a Forum software will do the same. Every site no matter whether its coded with PHP or ASP or just HTML, it will only send HTML, CSS content to browser. So coding language doesn't affect their loading time. The factor that decides loading time is how much images and other elements you have and the size of content. A complex HTML site will take more time to load than a simple forum.

If earning money is the prime factor, then our niche should be Adult or Warez site. The more "technical" knowledge your visitors have, the less will be ads clicks.
If your site is about computers, then higher chance is most of your users will run things like adblock plus. So, you won't have much ad clicks.
in that case, as Taz said, you should sell ads spots yourself, instead of using Adsense or Adbrite.

If your site is about (for example) cooking, then most of your users won't be good in tech stuffs. So they will click on ads without knowing whether they are ads or a part of site's content. In that case you can earn good with Adsense or other such things.
