So after finding this article, I thought I'd open up a topic for UFO discussion.

Firstly, I will say - I'm definitely a skeptic. I'm not sold on us being 'totally alone in the universe'. But as for anyone trying to make contact with us, or visit us, or abducting us for experimentation...I find it a bit far-fetched.

UFO spotted over Batemans Bay sparks alien theories

  • Man films bright light flashing on horizon
  • UFO investigator says it's a genuine sighting
  • "In world terms it has been a very busy year"

Ben Roberts captured the image and says it was definitely not a star.

IT'S not a bird, it's not a plane, and it's certainly not one of those errant weather balloons so often blamed for UFO sightings.

According to Sydney UFO investigator Doug Moffett, a bizarre shining orb filmed hovering near Batemans Bay on the New South Wales south coast late last month is a genuine unidentified flying object.

Eurobodalla resident Ben Roberts filmed more than eight minutes of footage early on June 21 tracking the bright sphere of light flashing and moving above the horizon.

He said he was "amazed" by how bright the UFO appeared.

"It was not a plane," he said.

"There were no flashes and it was way too slow. Same for a helicopter - no flashes and too slow."

That doesn't necessarily mean it was a spacecraft full of alien lifeforms paying south coast residents an early morning visit.

But Mr Moffett, an investigator from UFO Research NSW, said it meant there was no reasonable explanation.
"It doesn't fit any of the usual suspects, such as Venus, planes, weather balloons or military flares," he said.

"I really don't see it being a remote controlled aircraft with LEDs because if someone was doing that they're probably not going to do it at night. It's what I would call a genuine UFO."

Mr Moffett said the planet Venus, which often shines brightly in the night sky, was often mistaken for a UFO because as its light penetrated the atmosphere it sometimes twinkled and appeared to move - a phenomenon known as scintillation.

However, the light captured on Mr Roberts' footage did not fit that scenario.

The south coast sighting is just one of dozens of UFOs reported above Australia every year.

Mr Moffett said another UFO, reportedly shaped like a half-dome with tentacle-like protrusions beneath, was spotted over the Central Coast last month.

Mr Moffett said the number of local sightings appeared to be on the rise.

"Certainly in world terms it has been a very busy year," he said.

As Mr Spock would say, lets look at this logically Captain.

Take we earthlings, if we had developed space flight to such a degree, that humans were capable of reaching galaxies hundreds of light years away would we :

A: Head for the remotest part of said planet, have a quick look then bugger off home

B: Head for the remotest part, fly around a bit,and abduct some alien on the off chance he may be the intelligent one

Or would we :

A:Look for a centre of population, which has say a landing area ?
and

B: Introduce ourselves as an intelligent life form, capable of communicating ?

You see my argument is, if you have the technology to travel across space, then surely you have the intelligence to communicate.

Of course they could be taking a look and thinking, thanks a nice blue planet down there, lets take a look, they move closer and think Oh dear they sure have ruined that place, there's no intelligence down there !!

Or they're just scout ships checking out our defenses.

If they have the technology to get across galaxies, do you really think a surface to air missile is really going to worry them.

Of course there is the thought that they keep returning to see if we've destroyed ourselves yet ?

Good one.

But let's think logically here.

We know that the aliens exist. This is due to the immense amount of evidence, contained in everything from cave paintings to the Apollo 11 tapes in which alien spaceships are seen by the crew of a manned mission to the Moon.

Maybe they are unmanned drones just checking in every few years. You know, keeping an eye on use until the mother ships arrive.

I believe in aliens and possibly UFO's. It's strange how we never hear much about them crashing down to earth though.

I was also believe there is another life somewhere. Where those guys would be friends or enemy, that is the million dollars question.
However, if they are enemies and plan on attacking, even if their tech is superior to ours, it would be common sense for them to send some ships to check things, look at our military capabilities and such.

I allways think why should we be so arrogant to think that just us are alive their could well be another world out their..I have seen some UFO once when i was living in Germany we lived in a flat with countryside to the rear and one night i was woken up by a light streaming in the bedroom window and i looked and saw a airship land and the door opened than after a while it closed and took off..At the time i swear i thought i was dreaming as it was so real but i dont think that i was..Then a few other times i have seen strange unexplained lights..I think their is something else out their..

Arrogant or scientifically realistic? Earth is perfectly located in the solar system. To find another perfectly located system is infinitesimally small.

Anyway, if UFO's hosted ET, then one could postulate the thought that if they were able to travel across space or even time, and come to planet Earth, surely, just surely, they'd be intelligent enough to make verbal or identifiable contact, not to one person, but a mass audience.

Surely if they were able to create technologies which would allow them to get here, they'd be remotely interested in us and attempted to do something about it.

True what you say but how do you know they havnt been here ? They may live in another dimension to us and maybe they came for a visit didnt like what they saw and cleared off again..
I would have to sit on the fence so to speak as i am neither sure or unsure and certainly dont have any proof..Allthough i allways think if so many people have seen something strange then their must be some thing we dont understand out their..

Well I don't know if they have been here or not, and I don't know if they live in another dimension, and I don't know if they disliked it here and cleared off. But that's a lot of uncertainty, but what we do know is that people have claimed seeing UFOs. Now whether they are alien or not is also another point of discussion. But they have been seen to be in our dimension of space and time, so if that were true, and if they are intellectual, then it would be hard to believe they didn't want to make recognised contact. It just would seem self-defeating if they were able to travel across space or time or another dimension.

For one, if they actually did make contact then, it would be such a cultural shock to humanity especially, if their technology is really advanced as that would just make humanity feel really inferior to them.

If they're intelligent life then, they're probably smart enough not to create problems.

It would be interesting to speculate what humanity would do next. There will definitely be some space race or technological boom with many government funding grants being given out for the latest technologies, like of the magnitude of the Cold War era.

Of course, UFO's could just be secret experimental aircraft and people may be having too creative imaginations.

It would probably be near impossible to catch up with such civilisations at this stage.
Aliens who are capable of travelling between solar systems would have technology far beyond humanity.
By the time, humans can come up with such technology, they would have developed technology even beyond that as they would have access to much greater resources.

That said, it does provide some good motivation to progress technology much faster than the relatively slow paces we have today.
