University Forums

Maybe doing some sort of monthly/weekly quiz to test members their knowledge or those that signed up for this monthly/weekly quiz.

I think most people would rather not have more actual academic work on top of their college work load they already have.

It wouldn't be required. Members would be able to choose to participate.

There are people that like to quiz, the question shouldn't have to be really hard to make it look like course work.

Quizzing can be fun. 🙂

There's more forums not relating to university/education/academia than there is. That's a major flaw. I'm scrolling down the page and I completely miss the small 4 sub-forum section on University Living. Sure you could say the Student Advice/Discussion section is also a university/education/academia section, but I would disagree and treat that as just a general discussion section which any forum could have.

I think you need to expand the university based section to cover more ideas, such as a "degrees discussion", "courses discussion", discussions on specific universities, etc. It just seems like a lifestyle forum. Sure uni is more than study or discussion on your courses, but it seems you lack in that core area. You could expand that into sub-sections relating to science or the arts or whatever.

But anyway, that's just my view on what a university forum should have. It seems like the forum is geared maybe to a US or UK audience (which ever country you're from). I think you're going way too big, and thinking students from all major universities are just going to join. If you start with your local university and expand maybe to the ones in your state, and so on, you might get a better targeted audience.

First you say we're not broad enough and need more areas of discussion, then you say we're too broad in our coverage. Seems a bit contradictory.

I've had a lot of positive feedback on the layout and I don't see anything wrong with it. We are slowly expanding as we grow but I'm not going to add a ton of forums on the index while we're still this new. I just recently added those 4 sub forums you're talking about, and as they gain popularity, they will slowly find a place on the index. You may have missed it at first, but you also obviously did find it. The point is, you can see Assignment Help & Discussion. If someone wants to discuss an assignment or needs help, then they'll click that regardless of whether they saw the sub forums or not and will then discover the sub forums (and my sticky topic about it) once going in. Our new theme will also put a spotlight on that section as well. 😉

As for the geographic realm, I can talk to people in my university in person, why do I need a forum for that? And I'm from the US, so a lot of my posts are focused on the way the US does education though we have users from the UK, other European countries and even India posting actively on the forum. Why should I limit my memberbase when it's going to be just as hard (or harder) to get members from a specific state when I can accept people from all over the world?

Thank you for feedback, but it's not really something we're interested in accepting and pursuing at this time. You have your take, I have mine.

Well I think the theme is beautiful and appropriate for your forum content.
Furthermore, I think the sections are fine! Though I do have some suggestions.

Being a university student myself, well...er long story short: I'm taking a break.

Fitness & Health should include food, beverages etc, and managing your food plan / budget for that.

you should also include greek life. Frats and Sororities are huge and the parties that go on are HUGE in the first part of college, through the end.

As you expand you should have a whole section dedicated to roommate living and dorm life - it's a huge aspect.
You should also have a downloads section where people can download:
-Calendars
-Time management apps, excel sheets, etc
-Useful addons for microsoft word, photoshop, etc that are education-related

Also as you expand include:
-Writing: essay writing is much different in college.
-Studying: high school studying techniques don't fly in college
-Major choices: let members help other members choose the best major for themselves

> Fitness & Health should include food, beverages etc, and managing your food plan / budget for that.

We already have food related topics in the F&H forum, I need to revamp all of our forum descriptions (I'm assuming that's what you read). Our old theme didn't show descriptions so even I can't recall what's in all of them since I rarely read them.

>you should also include greek life. Frats and Sororities are huge and the parties that go on are HUGE in the first part of college, through the end.

There's a topic in College Life about that, but it's not too popular. My philosophy is to only add forums when a topic is popular and the members are greatly interested in it. That's the not the case here.

>As you expand you should have a whole section dedicated to roommate living and dorm life - it's a huge aspect.

That's actually what College Life is, in large part, mixed with other misc. college campus discussions. Right now a good few of our members aren't on campus living, so discussions are lacking. That's definitely an area I'll be expanding as soon as possible though.

>You should also have a downloads section where people can download:

Definitely something I'm interested in, and have been slowly working on gathering, it's just slow going. It'll be something we add eventually, thanks for the idea.

>Writing & Studying

All can be done in the Assignment Help & Discussion forum, in one of the sub forums depending on the subject or in the main forum if it's in general. I'm also working on an all inclusive "college writing" guide for our Tips section and after that is done, I'll do one for studying.

>Choosing your major

I can write a guide on that, but right now that seems to be a small topic to give a whole forum to.

Thanks for all your ideas. 🙂
