Unusual Promotion Methods.

On this blog post the blogger talks about getting links to your site by faking a hacker attack, which would cause people to blog about it or post in forums, and they would link to it. He also talks in another post about faking a sale of your website.
What is your opinion about these kinds of promotion methods?

I think they are bad. Unless it was big I wouldn't post about a forum being hacked (ex big as in Admin Zone, DigitalPoint, FP).
I think it would only increase backlinks.
