Update software without cpanel?

Is there a way to update phpbb without cpanel access? I no longer have cpanel details and my tech support hasn't been online since mid-July. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't trust buying stuff like that from sites like this.

Yes, you will definitely need FTP or cPanel access in order to update. As @Ozzy47 said, better get access to your cPanel.

Some software like WordPress and SMF have one-click updates for software. Do you all think that's a better alternative? I don't think it's enough to make someone switch software from phpBB etc., though.
