User Titles?

On your forum do you allow users to change their user titles or do you charge them with forum currency??

Nope.. They have to get the higher VIP group to able to chnage the name 🙂 and when we do contest or event, I allow it then and chnage it back

I'd give them the chance to earn it. I don't care to force a donation to get it, I rather would pay the hosting bill myself unless it was a biggest forum.

There's no way to change them for users on my forum, we have a ranking system for user titles based on an automatic promotion system. I.e, x amount of posts correlates with x certain user title.

The last forum I visited lets me change the user title every three months after I surpass 3000 posts. Before that, they would not let anyone do - including the VIPs and other members.

I don't have a forum but the ones I'm a part of allow me to do that either in exchange for forum currency or whenever I hit a milestone in terms of number of posts.

Some forums allow changing thread titles, but not all. Some don't even allow with forum currency.

I decided to disable them to non-staff because for me the ranks make it clearer what level the user is at on the forum, if that makes sense 🙂

I don't believe in restricting my members and making it so they have to earn it and forcing them to get anywhere on the board, if they want to change their personal titles then cool with me, their raking stays the same but if thy want to change titles, cool

Usernames usually not inclined to change. But their user rank I will allow so long as they have a specific reason to.

Always use VC, because having changing it is a privilege, if they want it, they have to earn it by posting on the forum. Plus if you let them do it, they could always change their user title all of the time, and it could confuse people. So it'd be better to charge them for it.

I let my staff have that permissions and VIP

I let anyone edit their user titles. I've always found how weird it is to only allow it for certain people, when it's a a core feature of a profile. For me, I don't even use the user title ladder, anyone and everyone can edit their profile to the fullest extent, it's their profile. For some forums I see it may be necessary to limit the feature, but general forums really have no reason to limit it. If they can pay for it via currency, that's a different story.

@Packie, how would a user title change confuse members? It's still under the same username, same color of the username (if applicable) - it's just text under your name. 😛

Confuse might be the wrong word, it might annoy some people if they keep changing it. Another point is if you don't let them change it then you can decide whether the user title is appropriate or not.

You can always have members report inappropriate user titles. Though, I still don't see how it could be annoying for one to change such a simple and rather overlooked feature? It'd be like someone changing their avatar every day. If someone gets annoyed over that most simple thing, I don't think they should really be allowed on the forum. Lol.

I had it set to where they could purchase a change in the shop on my forum. Once they purchased it, they'd have to message me and I would change it to whatever they wanted. Staff got free changes, though.
