I have heard tell of the title, but I am skeptical. I mean, are the user upgrades truly good enough to where the forum could make a good income - or even a small one? OK, one user upgrade would give you a name change or a colored username - but I can more likely see people paying for that in forum currency, not national money! 🙄

It depends on how people want to support the forum I think and if it's reasonably priced. Is it a good income where you could live off of it? Probably not.
I would probably set something up where it's X amount of dollars to say, get your name color changed but if you don't want to spend money you could post enough on the forum and pay X amount in forum currency to get it.
I believe there to be other various perks that could potentially be in place. My favorite (if it was effective in this day in age) would be to place an Ad or two on the site and then people can pay a small fee in dollars each month or perhaps even a determined amount in forum currency a month both benefit the forum in some way.

However, that too can be hard sell, simply cause so many people are so, well, sorry to say, stingy. 😛 But then again, is it fair for a few generous souls to pay for people who have the means to pay?

I agree, I do not think that a paid membership on a forum is going to be a thing for most unless there is some sort of magnificent reason that you have to pay a membership fee to be on the forum and the benefits were just absolutely outstanding!

Of course, someone selling a skill - like say SEO knowledge, could pull that off. However, the owner has to really have that knowledge and can prove it. For instance, let's say he/she had ranked a website for a competitive term. Well, that could be enough to get buyers.

I agree that I'd still rather have users be able to join and maybe get a sneak peak of what's available and then pay for exclusive content...the tricky thing is what keeps that information from leaking out into the public eye...you'd have to have that section on total lock down...ie no copy, no screenshots. However, that doesn't keep you from typing it out onto a different screen. Unless of course you make it where the text is only visible if the screen is active...soooo convoluted.

No way to really stop that. I suppose it's a thing where you have to get as much as you can. Get to as many people as you can - before you get copy-cats!
After that point, you just have to hang it up, go on to something else.
