Users of all current versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser might be vulnerable to having their computers hijacked because of a serious security hole in the software that had yet to be fixed Monday.

The flaw lets criminals commandeer victims' machines merely by tricking them into visiting Web sites tainted with malicious programming code. As many as 10,000 sites have been compromised since last week to exploit the browser flaw, according to antivirus software maker Trend Micro Inc.

The sites are mostly Chinese and have been serving up programs that steal passwords for computer games, which can be sold for money on the black market. However, the hole is such that it could be "adopted by more financially motivated criminals for more serious mayhem — that's a big fear right now," Paul Ferguson, a Trend Micro security researcher, said Monday.

"Zero-day" vulnerabilities like this are security holes that haven't been repaired by the software makers. They're a gold mine for criminals because users have few ways to fight off attacks.

The latest vulnerability is noteworthy because Internet Explorer is the default browser for most of the world's computers. Also, while Microsoft says it has detected attacks only against version 7 of Internet Explorer, which is the most widely used edition, the company warned that other versions are also potentially vulnerable.

Microsoft said it is investigating the flaw and is considering fixing it through an emergency software patch outside of its normal monthly updates, but declined further comment. The company is telling users to employ a series of complicated workarounds to minimize the threat.

Many security experts, meanwhile, are urging Internet Explorer users to use another browser until a patch is released.

This is extremly great news -lol-

If you use IE full time, youre in some trouble...may I suggest Opera?

People who us IE deserve everything that happens to them in my opinion. Everything about that browser is crap.

You and Opera. ~lol~

We are all lucky you do not control the internet or anything or there would only be one browser, opera. ~lol~

If I controlled the internet, things would be bad indeed -lol-

Id redirect yahoo to you guys though. Im keeping google for myself -😉-

This just proves the point that IE is the worst browser. When security people say dont use something, it cant be that good lol.

You really thin that? Goes into emo corner and cries (while cutting).

They are easy to install as it does all the work for you so even beginners can install it... Downloading it is the hardest part.

Firefox is the best.
O' rly? And why do you say that?

Its not because of the security, as it has an unpatched exploit right now. Actually, Opera is the only browser without any security issues right now.

So, still, why is it better? Apperence is never an answer, because both FF and Opera have skins, so they both could look the same.

Again, why? Speed doesnt matter, they have about the same loading times with Opera being faster sometimes, and FF others. Theyre equal in this area.

Starting to wish you didnt say that? You cant even say that FF is used by more people, because it isnt. Little known fact, Opera has a mini browser for cell phones, its used by 44 million people daily. So yes, FF may be on more desktops, but it doesnt win the war everywhere -😉-

Regretting it, arnt you? FF has more addons right now, this is true. However, I do expect Opera widgets to take off very soon as more web programmers see that Opera is out there, and they need to tend to us users as well. Theres alot of them out there actually, you just must know where to look http://widgets.opera.com/

Im fine with you guys saying FF is better than IE, but dont say its the best, I get angry -razz-

Don't you think its a little sad that your this protective of a browser? -n-

Yea when I read this I said to myself " I am very happy I havn't been an IE user for about 3 years now.

Nope -happy-

You see, its not so much about the browser, but who I am. I like to be the odd ball out, doing what others dont, using what most people dont. However, as in anyone theres a need to blend in, which I heal by getting people to copy me lol.

So its not so much about the browser as its my personality. If im being sad for being me, then I think you have insecurity issues -😉-

I dont even use IE. Well I do, when I am editing a skin or something, I will check it in all the browsers to make sure everything is ok.

I think he is just trying to say that it is only a browser so it is no massive deal, there is nothing wrong with like different things either.

One thing I learned from this post is never say FF is the best browser in front of Ghost. ~lol~
