Personally it really bugs me when people do this on forums.

If you do not understand, I'll give you an example. My site is www.LevelUnlocked.net, so I could sign up to a site a make my username "www.LevelUnlocked.net". This really annoys me when people do this, maybe if the name was just "LevelUnlocked" it wouldn't be so bad, but I can't stand having the TLD on it too.

What's your opinion on this?

It annoys me too. Its a cheap way of advertising.
I believe a username should represent you, and not your site. If someone responds to me, he can say, "Hi kavin, i think...........". But what if i have domain (example www.google.com) as username? Can he call me "Hi www.google.com, i think........."? It won't make any sense.

why not use your domain name as your username if it's normal, natural and doesn't sounds too funny?

But personally I think it does sound a bit strange. It's easy to say a name like Flux, or magicmagick, but adding "dot com" to the end just makes it sound strange. Personal opinion though.

Because it doesn't represent you, as i already said. If you want to quote my post and say something, you can say "Kavin, i think.........", but what if i want to say something to you? saying "Hi magicmagick.com, .............", it won't look like i'm saying something to you. it would look like i'm saying something to your site.

I don't agree.

My username on any given site is my "identity" so you are actually referring to me when you say magicmagick.com on this forum because it is my username here.

I personally don't like many things but who am I to judge and decide what is good for other people.

If it was on my forum, I'd delete the account or force change their name. If it's a public forum like this, good on 'em for utilizing another channel of advertising.

I think it's a bit silly but to each their own. What's even more silly is shoving your opinion of something down another person's throat which is what you do when you forcibly change someone's username solely because it offends you. I mean sure it's your right to do whatever you want on your board but it's every person's right to not be at your forum too.

This is a very good point.
And when I made this thread I did not mean it about promotion forums as I would expect people to do that. I also don't want arguments guys, lets keep the peace 🙂

It doesn't overly bother me but equally it is not something that I find that appealing either. If a user wishes to and there are no rules against it then in my opinion users should go for it if they want their url as their username.

The only possible reason someone will have their domain as username is for advertising. Unless i have a promotion or admin or webmaster forum, i won't allow them to advertise in such a way.
Ofcourse its their wish to stay or not, but why would i care to have such a member who even want to use his username as advertising method? Ofcourse if its a promotional or admin forum, its understandable. But many non-technical forums restrict advertising in signature, so i don't think advertising through username should be allowed in such sites.

As far as advertising goes, I see it as a rather piss poor and ineffective advertising method. No one is going to bother copy and pasting a link into a URL field and I personally don't attach a site to a person as they are two separate things. No one sees an username and pictures a forum sitting behind a computer screen so not sure why one would even want to put their forum as their face so to speak. Like I said before, I don't mind it as to each their own but I think it's rather silly and taking a look at why I think of it as such will show why you might want to reconsider not doing it if you are guilty of doing it.

It's a pet peeve of mine, I just think it's irritating and a desperate plea for attention.

That being said, I mean no disrespect towards those that do, and I never talk about it or ask them to change their name.

I find it rather annoying as well. Although most who I've seen do that don't post much.

While I wouldn't make a rule on my forum saying that you can't use a domain as your username, I really don't like when people do this.

Of course you don't, why would you. You've chosen your website address because it blatantly advertises your site. I think it should be punishable, especially on here due to the nature of this forum. Lastly, about the 'I won't judge and decide for others' doesn't really make a difference. The Government controls a country and it's the same as a forum, the Administrators control a forum, so it's up to them what you can and can't do.

Are you telling us that you have no ulterior advertising motive when using your website domain name as your username?
