What do you make of users who sign up to your forum with the same username as their forums name ?

I done this once, I changed my username to TV Mania on Promotion Source a while back.

Your views on this?

A decent way to advertise I guess but it seems very desperate.

Yeah it does seem desperate. Doesn't really work unless you put the actual domain in. (.com etc..)

 Good job I don't have a forum with my username then 😛

Yeah, your username now is cool though. Tell me again how you got it. Mistake or something. I forgot

A friend deleted a forum I was an admin on in a fit of temper and I thought he'd made a big mistake doing it so when I opened mine up the username was appropriate, simplez 😛 Now it's more apt as to the mistakes I make

Oh, cool story. Do you use that username on all forums then?

Some places yes but I don't really go anywhere now apart from here, first and last port of call nowadays

Oh haha, cool stories. :cheer:

If you really want to network with other people and form some good bonds, they need to have an actual name to associate with you. I see people who do this as desperate for members personally. Nobody is going to join a forum just because the person puts their site name as their username.

This wouldn't even be a problem if you promoted to any real audience (assuming your forum doesn't target a webmaster audience specifically)

I'll admit it makes me do a facepalm. But having said that a while back I joined a forum with the same username of a forum I had. Though I never promoted it there in anyway way. The name of the forum was just a word so I doubt anyone knew. 😛

I agree with all of it. Well said theezy, +rep 😎

To me, it's not a major issue if you are on webmaster forums and promotion forums. If it were on some discussion forum or even coding forums, it may become annoying, just trying to communicate with them.

eg. "Hi forumpromotion.net, how are you"

I know of a few high profile members here have URL usernames on DigitalPoint, so it's not outrageous or anything like that.

Yeah. When you are trying to communicate with someone you need a nickname. Not like. 'Hello Forum Promotion' or 'Hello google.co.uk' Well said David 🙂

Yeah, though even the digitalpoint owner uses digitalpoint which is sort of confusing at times.

Well I never see that user, there are so many boards there though.

Hi I'm Warriorcatsrpg.com. I'm totally not here to promote anything 😛 How's it going lately, forumpromotion.net?

...I think it's just silly. If you want to do so on your own board and think it might be easier for people to pick you out as the owner, feel free, but it isn't common practice as I have seen it and sometimes there are silly members who spoof admins that way.

Also users who don't change their username from the default of 'admin' 😛
