Anyone ever thought of using a crowdfunding website like IndieGoGo to raise money so that you could upgrade your forum from free to paid software like Xenforo?

I have never heard of crowdfunding? Can you explain more about it please?

Yes, the thought has crossed my mind. Only thing is whether you will be able to raise any funds. However, many crowdfunding sites have flexible funding where you keep whatever you can raise. So even if you raise just 100usd, you get to keep all of it, less their commission, of course.

I've thought about using it for somethings on my site but paid forum software was not one of them. I don't think using a paid software is really even worth it. Using a paid over a free one doesn't mean more people will sign up, whats more important is the look and feel of the forum.

I wouldn't personally use that method, but that's just me. xD

sounds like a lot of hassle.

actually, paid software is more likely to attract more people. For instance, I would much rather join a vB or xF forum then a ZB or phpbb forum. xD

Maybe so, but in many cases a phone, smf, mybb, etc can be designed and setup as professionally as a paid one (and sometimes and even better, a lot of people are complaining about the direction vbulletin is going)

I've never heard of crowdfunding until now and being honest it sounds like a bit of hassle to me. If you are going to use decent paid software - either have the funding available or just save up until you do.

I have thought about using websites that are designed to do fundraising, but I have not got around to seeing how well some of them works.
