Many people use Tumblr for backlinking. But, maybe the real reason to use Tumblr is how it lets you establish on online community of devoted fans for your writing or art. Tumblr is not only a micro blog but also social network allowing fans to contribute, view and comment on each others work. Very much like a social network of writers and artists, not just friends (such as you would get on Facebook). For this reason, linking to your own main site or blog from Tumblr could produce a good amount of traffic, assuming your site is related to the content you are posting on Tumblr.

I think that if you are active on Tumblr and these other social networking sites, you can see success from it. A lot of folks fail though because they just post here and there and never get anything out of it. You have to use the site for all it can give you and then some!
