Variety in products

It’s not really variety of products but variety IN products. I wonder why products now have a variety. Take for instance Coke, there’s a regular Coke zero, light, cherry, vanilla and some others that I haven’t seen yet. In the olden days, it is either Coke or Pepsi but now it’s not enough to order the name of the product, you also have to qualify which kind of the product. Is this a business strategy or just an enhancement of choices?
 
It is just promotion and marketing techniques to build your sales. The various products are none other than different from each other except changes in some minor details. But they are good way to promote things and get more sales for various tastes of people around.
