I have seen some many posts saying that Ip.Board is much better than Vb4.

But so many major forums are powerd by Vb 4.

But I think that Vb4 should be a small bit cheaper.

Yeah, I had to purchase vB4 as my license had run out, however, I'm stull using 3.8 as I prefer the look. Also, I don't think all the MOD's I have are out for vB4 yet.

It won't happen. vBulletin has had 4-5 price increases over the last little while. IPB hasn't had one price increase since 2.2 came out in 2006. We also got IPB if we paid for support.

If you ever had to deal with vBulletin's support, you would want to go with IP.Board. Their Admin CP is definitely much simpler, and the Live Search feature on the ACP is great as well. Their support also fixes most of your problems for you as well, before telling you what the cause was. IPB also is much more efficient when it comes to space and bandwidth, though most of the free options are better in that sense. Facebook Connect and OpenID also work great on IPB (Twitter Connect is also coming in 3.1). Most of IPB's features that have been implemented were implemented only because users asked in company forums. Do try out IPB, and do try out vBulletin.

Mind you, I do prefer phpBB 2's ACP (you heard me) over vBulletin's. vBulletin is NEVER going to be the same now that Kier Darby is gone.

Vb 3.8 looks a lot better than VB4 but i have to say that IPB is terrible to use, compared to all the other softwares.

I prefer IPB not only because it is a better software but because of the way they treat people. If you speak to some vb users or look at their support forum, you will see alot of people are annoyed with the their changes to prices and the structure.

The CEO of the host we use (HawkHost) is converting their support forum to IPB from vb as he is not happy about about the way vb has changed things. For their new host they also started off using IPB instead of vb. Also i think Fergal isn't happy about the changes either.

Have you ever used any of them in an administrative perspective?

No one should be. They were just doing it to make a short term profit, which damaged their reputation (for now) and customer satisfaction. The entire IPB site is powered by IP.Content, IP.Board, and software by IPS, where vBulletin's site isn't. Conversions used to only be from A to B, J to X, or maybe I to W, but as of late, most of the forum conversions have been from vBulletin to IPB. Not only that, IPS gives you the necessary tools to redirect vBulletin (or vBSEO) URLs over to IPB's, hence you don't lose any PageRank, indexing, or whatnot.

I can´t stand vBulletin 4. It looks crap, there is no mods for it and the price is expensive. vB3 was a lot better.

Also going on from what i said previously, many people dislike vb and while some may leave and go to IPB, some may grit their teeth and pay to upgrade. If you have a large forum for example it is better to stick with vb then convert to another software completely. Not only from a technical point of view or an ease point of view but also members get attached to the forum software of a forum and completely changing it can have a negative effect on a forum.

I don't think vB will ever go down in price. Part of it being that their software is real reliable and there never really is any complaining about it. Plus they were pretty much the first paid software out there.

vb4 obviously isnt done yet. I dont know why the released as gold / completed.. As far as Im concerned its still in the RC stages.

This is one popular skin designer has to say about their new template system:
To our customers,

As some of you may know, we started our vBulletin 4 updates with the Fundamental skin. We made significant progress, but when we delved into the internals of the style it became abundantly clear that the new "template engine" (used in quotes because we feel it is an inaccurate description of the poorly thought out and executed template system) is, at best, bugged and incomplete. vBulletin's customers' complaints over the "template engine" number in the hundreds and can be found on the vBulletin forum and blogs.

We did a little digging, a little spying, a little survelliance and have uncovered a certain rumor (from a reliable, internal source), that fixing the "template engine" is now a priority and that we may see a significant overhaul near the time of the 4.04 release. I want to stress very, very strongly, at this point, this is just a rumor. However, it is our opinion that, as the complaints stack higher and higher, an announcement will be made soon confirming the above.

To that end, we are temporarily suspending our vBulletin 4 updates until the overhaul. This is not a decision of convenience. In its present state the "template engine" is simply unusable for anything other than simple customizations. We absolutely share the vBulletin community's extreme disappointment with the code, CSS, and new "template engine".

We will keep you updated with the latest and greatest vBulletin developments.

vb3.8.x is obviously the best choice you can make if you are a vb user or thinking about switching. They just released vb 3.8.5 a couple weeks ago.
vb3.8.x is great. There is loads of things you can do with it.

At this point, you can't get a new license. You have to buy it used. It might be cheaper, but you might get in trouble and all that.

If you buy the vb4 package, you also get access to all the other versions of the software.
