Hi, can anyone tell me the pros and contras of using a Vbulletin board?

Thanks in advance!

Everyone has different opinions on every software. In my opinion you should try out all the different forum softwares yourself (either by installing the software yourself or trying out demos) and the decide for yourself which software fits your needs the best. It is always good to consider what type of people you are targeting your forum at. If you are targeting your forum at people who are not that computer illiterate then using a more simpler forum software might be better. If users find it too confusing they may not sign up and too many features may scare some users off.

Pros - great software, popular with users.
Cons - pricey, lots of bugs out of the box. No built in SEO.

"Great software" is your opinion (some people wouldn't agree) and all forum softwares are "popular with users" otherwise the chances are those people wouldn't use it. Those are not really based on anything other then how you feel.

I wouldn't say it is based on just how I feel. A lot of people prefer VB over many other software. A lot of the BIG Boards use VB. For example. TAZ and DP. Which are pretty popular. Why do you think it is so hard to find a copy for sale? If it wasn't great other than my opinion then why does it cost so much, let alone the thousands of people who have purchased it as such a high price. Not to say that another software can't be a big board, take here for example.

FP = Total Members: 11,079
TAZ = Members: 62,392
DP = Members: 532,719

If you had a blank slate of a forum. You did two versions. A phpbb3 and a VB version. Odds are people would join the VB version before they would the phpbb version. That is based from experience and not opinion.

So you could say it is great based on my opinion yes. I personally think it is great. Yet I think phpbb3 is great too. In my opinion a lot of them are, VB, Xenforo, IPB, phpbb3, myBB, and SMF...aside from those. I don't personally like any of the rest.

Most big forums use Vbulletin (especially the webmaster forums). I have used it for 6 years now. Solid script. Hate their support, hate the default design, which is horrible. But the script is good.

I now come to like Xenforo, which is still immature (compared to VB), but does the job I need. I don't need tens of useless plugins, bells and whistles, so it really does the job.

I tried the VB demo yesterday and one reason why I like it is because of all it's build in features like SEO URLs, reputation system, groups and even custom titles. One thing that bothers me is that the support section is licensed members only and you've to pay for minor updates. Also the price is a bit expensive for something that you could make in phpBB with the right mods. But yeah, I never used it live so that's why I created this topic.

Please don't compare phpBB with VB, they're light years apart. PhpBB is one of the weaker scripts (and that comes from someone who loved it 8 years go), so, if you want a free script run mybb. That's your choice.

See if you like Xenforo more. It's pretty nice.

I tried MyBB out and it had a lack of features, and a bad way of setting permissions in my opinion.

who cares about SEO?

If I really have to answer that..

all webmasters who want to do something with their site.

Right now I can't judge vBulletin as it looks great although I've been told the AdminCP is terrible. For me, IPB and Xenforo are the best.

vB's current developers aren't as good as the original ones. They aren't producing a high quality product like they used to. IPB and XF have risen to the top in paid software's.

ashimashi, you need to CARE about SEO. That makes the difference from having FREE traffic (hundreds or thousands/day) or having to promote each day for few visitors. 🙂

I'm getting to the point where I am going to have to make a choice between Xenforo and VB. This thread has helped somewhat, but need to clarify regarding the SEO point of view - does VB need an extra SEO plugin then? I'm guessing Xenforo doesn't?
