vBulliten. Is it worth it?

I'll chime in here. I've used IPB, MyBB, phpBB, SMF and vBulletin.

I have three forums and three vBulletin licences.

A python script, sound interesting...I will look into that, not that I would want to do an illegal activity, but I didn't know something like that ever existed. I thought You just had to restart.

IPBfree has an ad with a virus on it and that is being worked on, then when the forum first opened there was some downtime for a day but I hope nothing like that happens again.

Three vBulletin licences :O Wow. How can you afford so many licences? One license is a lot of money... 3 forums seems like a lot to be running as well. Which do you like best?

Yes. It's totally worth it if you're making a forum that you think is going to be successful and you know it'll have a backbone of supporting members... if you're just buying it to create some general forum then that's a total waste of money.

I want to be 120% sure that my forum will hit it big, like 4chan big big. Then I would consider buying vB. Until then I will stick with my current budget of $0. You can make some great things with a budget of that, but you may need to get a bit creative.

Hmm...

Unless you put your money where your mouth is, your forum may not get quite that big. Sometimes entirely free forums do succeed, but they never get the level of professionalism given by a domain.

I do know that to look nice you have to spend some ammount of money like for a domain, and possible advertising, but I do plan to buy a domain. I feel that you shouldn't buy a domain unless you know the forum is active and won't die. Unless you know the forum will succeed then I personally wouldn't risk the money on it. That's why vB is a huge deal. It costs a ton of money but lots of big sites have it. It can't be that different than any other forum hoster.

That is very true. There are alot of forums out there that are big and active and that are on free hosts using free software or free forum hosts. It is harder but it is certainly possible to do.

and It's that work that I am trying to do, it can be done, but most people don't want to put that much effort into it and would rather waste their money on the easy way of doing things. I think a fund that members can donate too would make for a great way to cover the cost of vBulliten or anything for the forum that costs money.

See but you can't plan things like that. You can't just assume " Oh I'll set up a free forum and all the members will donate to me so we can get a vBulletin. It's always best to underestimate rather than over estimate when it comes to running a business ( believe it or not a forum is a business ). You need to think about it, if you think you are going to have a really good forum, and a creative idea that's not one of the common top 5 (gaming forum, general forum, promotion forum, anime forum, music forum) then you might just want to shell out the money for a more expensive board software.

vB 4 SUCKS. I hate its design, I would go with any other forum provider than vB 4. Other than that, all the other versions were awesome and well worth the money, and skinning is very simple.

But MyBB is just like vB but it doesn't have that many "options" per say. If you can't afford vB, I would just go with MyBB untill you can afford vB, but DON'T use vB4, it sucks compared to all the other versions...I would get v.3.8.4

Wow, anime forums being one of the top 5 surprised me, I didn't realize that there were so many of them. I guess I could be overestimating, but I realize that 95% of the people will not donate, as I tend not to donate to online sites. I know that vB 4 is the newest version but maybe you just need to give it time and you will come to like it.

I can guarantee that IPB is 10x better than vB in every way, support, user friendliness, admin panel, etc, its just so much easier and better.

You can only guarantee your opinion. 😛

Anyways Im sure vb4 will be great one day. Right now IM sticking with 3.8.4. :cheer:

Regardless, I'd stick with vb 3.8 too. I didn't say vB was bad, all I said was IPB was better... it seems that neither of them are too up to par with their new releases, IPB 3 isn't as good as 2.X and vB 4 isn't as good as 3.X

Interesting. Why is IPB 2.x better than 3.x?

Personal preference. There may be more functions but the look of IPB 2.x is a lot better Imo
The default theme's bad and overused, I agree, but you can always just get a theme like in any software.

Finding good quality themes for IPBfree is very hard. Not many exsist out there, I've only seen about 50 total everywhere on the net. Is vB very easy or hard to find good themes/skins for? I do have my doubts that the vB support team are friendly and all since the amount of people using vB is so large they cannot be too personal to everyone.

I would think there would be plenty of themes with the massive amounts of users, but on the other hand 60% of them use the default theme. 😛

And can't you just use an invisionfree theme for IPBfree? They're practically the same thing, aren't they?
