I recently noticed this over on ProBoards Support, and this happened back in October. I am shocked to see that Patrick Clinger sold his baby. He has owned and operated ProBoards for 20+ years. It seems the pandemic really hurt the company.

Back in February 2021, ProBoards sent out an official PM to every single registered user on every single ProBoards forum:

ProBoards has supported our communities for over 20 years. Now, we need your support.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a serious strain on our resources. Our forums are not going away, but we need your help. In return for your support, we are offering a variety of unique rewards.

Please take a minute to read this message from our CEO and consider supporting us.

From all of us at ProBoards, thank you for being a member, and thank you for your support.

The ProBoards Team

I'd say this is why they had to sell.

I agree that's probably the reason, but still I would never have seen Patrick selling he loved Proboards.

They probably offered him to much to turn down. Your going to see some big checks from VS.

I bet they were on the brink of going under. That would be the only explanation. I remember ProBoards did have its headquarters out in Silicon Valley, and I see nothing about its existence on Google now.

There's no telling what kind of money was involved.

Yeah VS don’t mind spending the money.

I'm just curious where that money is coming from. What is generating enough revenue to be buying up everything like this? And how can I work for them? 😛

Could be similar to ZetaBoards. We didn't think Brandon would ever sell it and then out of the blue he did, and a big reason was because he was in debt with the thing and had been taking out loans to keep it afloat at points. Considering that PB was asking its users for donations at one point I wouldn't be surprised if money was tight or even putting the owner in the red, and just closing it down doesn't resolve the financial issues already in existence, it just stops new ones.

I've only used Proboards as it's free & user-friendly for those of us who are not into tech. I know there are a lot of issues we've been having. I hope with the new ownership will come better support.

I used PB for a long time, started out there on Version 1. I never looked for staff for support I always used the support forum.

I was not aware the Proboards was bought out. There could be a whole host of reasons why it was since we don't know what is going on behind closed doors and we aren't the ones that own it. One can only speculate.....

Pretty epic that ProBoards is still around and is active than most forums with "modern" software. Regardless of the financials it is activity that makes forums valuable so I suspect that's what VS is after.
