Do you think this works? When members get to be VIP's if they donate, I personally don't see it working, unless you own a big forum.

You would have to have a pretty large forum, as if its small, theres a good chance only one or two, if any people will donate, then the VIP pretty much becomes a two way chat.

A good idea if you want to make a VIP section though would be to offer like an @yoursite email, and maybe access to a downloads section with wallpapers, and other cool stuff. I know a gaming clan I was in offered a cool title in the forum and a boatload of in-forum currency.

If you have a ton of exclusive content or rare stuff it will work, but if all that you get is a forum for VIP, it won't work.

I know a site that has two VIP staus... it makes a lot of cash from it...

It works for some boards that give a reason for people to donate, others like just a forum to chat... not really. A good example is the BHW Junior VIP membership. It gives you access to the Jr VIP forum where more methods are shared on the open forum, and since it's a pretty big forum it's not empty there at all.
Ya this is a good idea if used in the right way. Offer more stuff then just like a secret section like downloads and crap as other people have stated.
Another good idea would be to just promote worthy people into the group for free in addition to offering the paid way. That way it gets things rolling and it dosnt just become a donations group.

VIP / Premium accounts can be very attractive to members, if they come with additional advertising rights. I know of one forum who only allows links in signatures, for their premium members. It appears to work quite well for them, but it is a top quality and large established forum.

I always think this works well. It encourages members to give money to the forum but you also give them something back. If you were to donate to a forum, it is nice to get a thank you but it does make you feel alot happier if you more then just 2 words. Alot of people say thank you but don't really mean the words. This shows you do really appreciate them giving you some of their hard earnt money.

It is a good idea, but if your a small forum starting out with a member base of 20 members and quite a few hundred posts I would atleast make 2 of them VIP, it is a great way to improve your forum for updates, also larger forums I don't see the need init with them.
