VIP for money

Yeah, I don't think it will work, as what much more can VIP do than a normal user?

Sometimes, depending on the forum, a VIP can have a lot more priviledges than a regular user can, besides posting in a special forum. The most I've heard of is more PM space, more advertisement space if it's an advertisement forum, etc. It's all a matter of what the forum si about, as to what you can offer with it.

You need a reason for them to donate. A 'rank' doesn't seem to be enough to get most people to donate, IMO. You would need to offer something more, like exclusive stuff (like maybe a rare item if you ran an RP forum).

This is what Digital Point offers for VIP:

  • Access to private forum for premium users.
  • Storage of up to 5,000 private messages (they also delete after 6 months instead of 3 months).
  • Premium Member badge shows on your posts.
  • Ability to change user title.
  • Up to 4 external links in your signature.
  • Ability to customize colors/background of your user profile (temporarily not available, but will be returning).
  • For sale threads started in Buy/Sell/Trade will stick at the top for 2 hours after created and 2 hours when sale is ending.
  • For sale threads started in Buy/Sell/Trade will be highlighted with a unique color.
  • Keyword Tracker users get additional functionality (can search deeper as well as automatically check their data daily).
  • Any post made by premium members will have ads removed if it would have had one within the post.
  • Ability to make private bids on auctions.
  • Mediation of "deals gone bad" within Buy/Sell/Trade if both parties are premium members.

That's $125 per year if you feel its what you need. A lot more people would probably purchase it if it was like $50 per year. Opinions?

Most of them are nice to have, but not necessary, though they can help.

This one is quite good: Ability to change user title.
As a normal member, it costs $25.

With a small forum there is no point in doing this.

Build up your forum until it's big, then maybe start it.

To be fair Digital Point has 13 million posts and nearly 2,000 online users right now. It's also targeted at webmasters with much larger websites, so to them $125 annually really isn't a lot of money and is well worth the added exposure.

Its a good idea if it can work, an example of a good site is corsa-c.co.uk

I saw it work on there with their Extra Membership, they make quite a large income from it, prices on there range between £12-14
