I dont agree with webmasters who decide to start VIP group and ask for donations and stuffs even before the community reach around 5000 - 6000 posts. When do you think a webmaster can announce VIP groups and ask for donors as far their forum milestones are concerned.
it can be hard at less to say if the forum is open for over an year with only 3K posts. at some stag they need to get some earnings to keep the server going.
Even so if they have VIP its members choice to go ahead or not go ahead with the updated account.
The way I see it, is that if a forum reaches 10,000 posts or a year old, whichever comes first, then a VIP group could potentially be made. Though one would first need an active enough userbase to consider it, without asking for donations.
I think that before rushing for a VIP we need to make sure there is a point for it and we will be able to give people something good and relevant in return for purchasing it.
In itself, I don't mind VIP is asked too early, especially if it is well defined, and the community has been poured considerable effort into it from the very beginning.
My beef with VIP is more when owners decide to that instead of thinking in perks to reward they go around taking common permissions in order to lock them behind the paywall. Things like being able to edit your post and have a signature or PM privileges. It just oozes greed and lack of care for the member base. It makes me feel every decision in the community will be around how to profit and the well-being of the member base is a second thought.
Have a donation feature implement and reward members for donating. I think this can be done at any point because donations can help improve the site. I wouldn't force people or bug people about it. That's how donations go from donations to paid VIP membership with no rewards.
I only think VIP should be implemented once the owner has VIP content to offer.
