Is there a piece of software that is good for the non-tech savvy kind of user? I keep getting viruses?

Re: Hackers?

Are you looking for intrusion software for non-tech savvy people?

If you're looking for intrusion software and labeled this thread "hackers", I'm going to go on a rant about how "hack" is the most commonly misunderstood word and start referencing the Jargon file everywhere.

Re: Hackers?

Ok Don't bother with that.

I meant "my computer is getting viruses - what can I do...."

🙂

Re: Hackers?

Download AVG and you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: Hackers?

Really? Damn dude, and here I thought being a member of 6+ of the world's biggest botnets was an accomplishment reserved for the elite. 🙁

Re: Hackers?

You really need to fix your title; not only is it misleading, you're going to get flamed for the reason Carson gave. Viruses do not equal hackers.

You need an anti-virus, eg. Avast, AVG, Kaspersky, Norton etc. which also may be an anti-malware/spyware tool.

Re: Hackers?

Avast and Spybot Search and Destroy is what you should go for, Avast is an anti-virus and Spybot is a spy-ware and mal-ware remover. Good luck 🙂

DavidL is right, the title is misleading. Just letting you know. 😉

Re: Hackers?

Run Avast and Spybot at the same time. That should cure your problem.

When I had a problem with viruses I used AVG and Avira Antivirus to get rid of them.

Both work pretty well, not to mention that they are both free.

Every computer in my house runs Avast and Spybot. We generally don't have any issues. 🙂

Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the simplest free antivirus you can use and it is the most trouble free.

Avast, AVG, Antivir, Comodo etc all gave me problems like computer slow downs, random wake up from sleep or hibernate. After switching to Microsoft Security Essentials I no longer get as many slow downs then third party antivirus.

Thesedays I just use Ubuntu Linux 10.04 whenever possible to avoid tWindows Viruses, and just use the default bundled software for Ubuntu, or popular software like FileZilla, Chrome, FireFox, VLC on Ubuntu.

I second MSE, but Avast is good too.

The best paid software is GDATA.
The best free is between MSE and AVIRA. but AVIRA has an ad that shows daily. But hey its great and free.

I use ESET Smart Security 4 Business Edition. I have had no issues with the PC's I have it on.

The best light AV's for those who do want to mess with updates or what to do when it finds a virus. Then use these 2 together. Threatfire and Panda.

If you want a great firewall I recommend ZA.

ps. AVG is crap. Stay away from them. I know from experience.
