So after the UK introduced its new law requiring age verification for accessing age restricted sites, it saw a huge 1000% increase in VPN usage, clearly people attempting to get round it.

Coincidence or not 🤔 what are your views on this?

what are your views on this?

The legislation behind it, namely the UK's Online Safety Act is deeply flawed, detrimental to its stated aim and arguably an assault on free speech.

The organization behind the Act, OFCOM has produced many hundreds, possibly thousands of pages of guidance to be followed in order to assist websites with compliance. The majority of it is over-verbose, word salad. OFCOM has created a Frankensteinian monster that may in the long run cause more harm than good.

This Act serves to replace that old fashioned notion that it is the parent who should in the first instance protect their children from harm. When I was a child so called top shelf magazines were common place as was bullying and peer pressure to do stupid things. We survived for the most part due to good parenting.

Our somewhat dim Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle recently stated that children don't search for pornography, pornography seeks out the child. Really? He clearly doesn't have children which is probably for the best.

So sites containing adult content are now age-gated in the UK which has lead to a massive increase in VPN usage. Adults and undoubtedly children are installing free VPNs by the million but of course nothing comes for free. Some of these VPNs come with payloads that are potentially far more dangerous than pornography. Where there's prohibition there will always be an opportunity for criminals and this is no exception.

This is just one aspect of the Act which is flawed but there are many others. I'll save the rest for another time!

I'm sorry you folk over in the UK is going through this nonsense. It's no wonder everyone is using a VPN lol, I would too! I wish people would start using forums again since this rolled out, but then I suppose we would have to make changes to our sites. :S

You should use a VPN regardless of your location. Governments and ISPs are far too invasive.

You really need to carry due diligence when using a VPN. Recent research revealed that 88% of free Android VPNs leak data and 71% actively share it.
Using free VPNs is a bad idea in general. It's best to stick with the reputable solutions. Their fees are generally quite reasonable.

Oh I mean I'm shocked it hasn't worked....not! The amusing fact is the very people this is meant to 'protect' are the most tech savvy ones and can get around it in seconds.

Another irony is all the publicity created by the Act appears to have led to an increase in content such as suicide and self harm. It's this kind of content the Act was it supposed to protect children against.

It's not as simple as you think, well, nowadays anyway. I hate this so-called crap that's been happening, and even that we have to temporarily live with it, till it ends up being revised and scrapped. VPN solves it, well, yeah and no. It just makes it harder as an adult who needs to do banking, as kids don't and also noted that some sites even with Imgur. don't like VPNs

End up turning it on and off XD

Still, we should not be living like this in our own country, can't do what the FLIP we want online, I mean it's sooo wrong about it. Never was about protecting under-16-year-olds, it's about controlling people

I'm now constantly switching between my usual connection, a VPN and the TOR Browser.

Incidentally, this is how your signature looks via my everyday connection.

@zappaDPJ I know, right! Tell me about it. I'm also based in the UK, and I'm getting it everywhere. Even of FP footer that displays affiliates makes the footer really bad.

I also use Imgur for most things, even on my own site, and just the last two days, I had to change things around (still incomplete) via looking elsewhere to host the images or host the images locally.

But I can say that there are a lot of sites that I visit I see the purple death.

Use VPN to resolve it on my end, or just relocate the images, as most people in the UK might not use VPN.. Even if Imgur blocks you from using a VPN, then, well, RIP.

At the end of the day, I know that it's just that the UK is blocked, and so other people from other countries can see the images - shame
