Hey Chewbacca,

Read these:
Dedicated hosting is where you have special dedicated servers which can be customized (hardware and software) and where you can store and host your websites with full access.

Virtual Private Server is between Dedicated Hosting and Shared Hosting. In this you have option to choose your own software and other customization like dedicated hosting but you will have only a partition space of the dedicated server and not the whole. It can provide your site with good control and bandwidth and cost less as compared to a dedicated server.

Here are comparisons between shared, VPS and dedicated server.

Hope that helps!

I notice that question some where else as well. A dedicated server resources are fully assigned to a single user. On other hand Resources of a VPS a assigned from a dedicated server. Where a limit is applied. Though the specific amount of resources are dedicated to the VPS user. The higher the resources they more heavy applications or able to handle huge traffic.

The major difference is VPS is a virtual server, whereas Dedicated servers are physical servers that are used for various requirements.

Dedicated means resource is dedicated and VPS resource is shared with many users (eg: RAM, CPU, etc)

On dedicated server you will get full total control on your server and CPU/RAM will be dedicated excluding bandwidth(depend on shared port or dedicated port). You will get more control.

a VPS is not an actual machine but a shared part of a dedicated server, and a dedicated server is a full server
