If you where to go out and purchase a VPS server for just your single website and not for hosting how much ram do you think would be considered plenty enough to run a forum for awhile?

512mb will be good enough for most forums. If you're getting a version with cPanel, use EasyApache to make sure php gets called via FastCGI and use the mpm_worker rather than mpm_prefork.

Yeah around 512mb just for hosting your site but I think you could host more than 5 sites on a VPS with 512mb of ram.

Depends how much user's are posting on your forums, and online at the same time, I have root access to a VPS with a forum that has 218~ user's daily and about 1900 average post per day and only using 508.49 MB, so 512 MB is perfect for a forum.
