So, until recently, I've been using shared hosting through either Godaddy or iPage. A friend introduced me to VPS and set up one of my sites on his server! Personally, I love it. It is especially nice with Wordpress sites as they load ten times faster than one hosted on the standard shared hosting plans. I even bought a VPN to broadcast music for my radio station.

Which do you prefer and why?

I personally prefer shared hosting for basic websites. Virtual machines are great for VPN's, Shoutcast, etc. iPage and GoDaddy are not the best shared hosting services out there for speed.

shared hosting is way cheaper and good for starting small websites. and shared hosting has way less work. VPN running a server is allot of work

Personally, I've been looking at a VPS and it's not a lot more than what I pay now. (It works out to about $2 USD more per month than what I pay currently. It would be $8 more per month if I added DirectAdmin panel. So even still, $10 more per month than what I pay currently and get so much more as a result.)

So I've really been considering it. The only issue I have is that I don't know anything about running a VPS so I'm not sure if it'd be something too in-depth and I'd be too in over my head to handle.

A virtual private server is more secure compared to a shared hosting. You own the server personally and there are not risk of data getting compromised or leaked. Though they come at a little cost variation, but satisfy every pockets with a lot more.

A VPS is definitely faster and more secure but also more costly at the same time. However, make sure that you look at reviews before going for a shared hosting or VPS plan as the most important thing is reliability.

Depending on the plan and the current discount (there are always some discounts, if you look in the service offers sections on different forums), a VPS doesn't have to be much more expensive than a shared server. In any case, a VPS gives you so much more security and stability comparing to a shared server.

Fortunately, I know how to install a free Panel into unmanaged VPS.
I actually thinking of opening a thread providing such a service.

I love WordPress plugins. However, certain beast of plugins are unable to be executed by shared hosting which piss..me..off down the drain.

Hence, I am no more using shared hosting. To me, shared host is a past tense.

Look for a host that offers managed VPS hosting. The price will be a little higher, but they will have support staff that can help you with just about everything server-wise

VPS would certainly be more stable and reliable option as compare to shared.

So just for a bit of an update, I did end up going with an unmanaged VPS. It actually turned out to be cheaper than the host I was with because they had a promotional code which gave 20% off the cost of my order.

Installing another panel wasn't that hard. I just had no idea at the time what the options were. (For anyone wondering the same thing... Sentora is a solid option.)

I was looking at managed VPS options but most of them were just out of the price range I could afford. So I decided to just handle things myself anyway. It wasn't as hard as I thought, though it's definitely a step up over being on a shared hosting plan. Thankfully I've had some experience with PuTTY and whatnot beforehand so it's not like I went into this completely unaware. Plus Google helps a lot.

If you have either the drive or skill to do it yourself then using a VPS can be a good option. Or if you don't mind paying for someone else to handle/help out then it's also a good idea too. But if you're on a limited budget and aren't tech savvy... stay with shared hosting as long as you can.

VPS is suitable for peoples who know how to manage VPS or at lest they have a good tech knowledge about linux.

If your site is just a simple blog but popular and you don't have a issue with security then you can use VPS and save money on shared hosting plans.

Shared hosting is good for peoples who is technically weak or they don't have a time for managing or monitor vps.

Its better to go with vps server itself. Secured than the shared hosting. It will be helpful for a seamless access

If you are looking for VPS Hosting service in India then it is better to get from Innovative Hosting Corporation. Is a VPS a better option for a forum or large blog? It would seem to be the case.
