I've only used a free domain once, and while I've never been picky about url's, that ones a definet "never again." I even prefer .com, .net or .org better. Of course, there're all too many sites out there these days that have a real TLD, and I think that's what we've all become accustomed to.

I've also heard that some free domains are only free for the first year of you having it. Any year after that and you have to pay for it like a real TLD. This is another reason why I'm not too crazy about them. I think .co.cc and .tk both do this if I remember right.

This one seems to be two years. But still, they can manually edit your account and have a redirect then suspend your account and you can't do anything about it, because you never paid.

.co.cc is free if you keep this little affiliate image on your site. Forever.
.tk is forever free (the last time I checked)

www.co.cc never does the pop-ups.
Ive had a .co.cc domain for over 2 years.

You have to keep renewing it every 1 year.
