What do you guys think of this? The government having the right to monitor any email and wiretap without a warrant in the name of national security?

This can lead to criminals encrypting their e-mails more in password protected zip folders with text files of their messages inside.

The only way to open a file is to crack a very hard password like

"UetIx🙁FUjiQ@SeUh'H~0/(3R861o-XS_'W[fbDu,%w6e{+Ih'N,EC_$Po({rR&"

I think it is an invasion of privacy for people, and just make criminals more likely to use Military/CIA grade disk encryption, fake identities, and in-person conversation in isolated places like the dessert, farm lands, and empty towns to talk about their behavior which can be very difficult to track.

No, I don't think the government should be able to wiretap anybody without a warrant. I'm not going to toss my rights away so the government can chase some boogeyman.

No, but if an attack was stopped because of illegal wiretapping, the offender shouldn't be prosecuted.

Well if that were the case, there are more serious problems because the government should not have had that access in the first place 😀

What about like those keyword things they listen for? What do you guys think of just monitoring that?

That's true, and again, terrorist cells are generally completely unknown until they actually carry out the act, and are extremely careful with their information. Randomly monitoring people really wouldn't do anything.
Also, the abuse of moderate Muslims and certain other groups' rights would likely push them to want to join the terrorist/extremists anyway... and those moderate muslims who would previously give tips on finding existing terrorists/recruiting centers (ie, moderate muslim goes to mosque, finds out his mosque is being used to recruit terrorists, goes to police, issue resolved, if we were to start racially profiling and monitoring people, the chances of that muslim wanting to help his country are very low)

I wish cosmic would come online... not sure where he's been 😀

warrant-less wiretapping can lead to a increase percentage of the population being rebellious against its own government since some people think by warrant-less wiretapping being legal some of their freedoms and rights are being taken away since Iran, N. Korea, and other countries who have fewer freedoms wiretaps and spys on its population more then free countries.

I live for the day N Koreans rebel. Though it would be devastating if they fail.
They will never rebel. They are all taught from birth to obey their leaders and most of them are under the impression that they have the greatest government around. There was a whole CNN special on it where a reporter got to go there and talk to people.

But there has been an exponential increase of defectors in recent years. Only time will tell if there will be something bigger, especially with a transfer of power due in the next few years.

Not that I think they should be able to, but what are you scared about? It's not like the government finds all the embarrassing things on your hard drive and tells everyone you know. It's not really an invasion of privacy. If you're doing illegal things you'll be arrested. If not, you'll never know.

My thoughts exactly. I've got nothing to hide, nor would I be embarrassed by them seeing anything on my computer.

Not saying that I support this monitoring, but I think some people blow this issue a little of proportion.

Why should they be able to open anyone's email or phone calls though? It doesn't matter what's in your email or what recordings are on your phone.

I support this one hundred and fity percent.
The only way we'll catch those nasty terrorist scum is by looking at their text messages and gmail account. Either way, we either catch a terrorist or get some exclusive pics of said suspects girl

I guess you'll get pictures of the girl, but al queda has proven over and over that they operate all over the world in small cells that don't even communicate with one another. Wherever they take their orders from probably isn't even in the middle east.

Who cares about some terrorists? Forbidden muslim porn is more than enough to receive America's support
