Microsoft has issued a "critical" warning over a newly-discovered flaw in Windows.

In a security advisory, the company warned of a loophole that could be used by malicious hackers to steal private information or hijack computers.

The bug potentially affects every user of the Internet Explorer web browser - around 900 million people worldwide.

Microsoft has issued a software patch to defend against attacks, and said it was working to develop a long-term fix.

The security advisory, which was published on Friday, details how the vulnerability can be used to manipulate users and take over their machines.

Although the flaw is actually inside Windows itself, it only appears to affect the way that Internet Explorer handles some web pages and documents.

Microsoft admitted that the problem meant users could easily be fooled into downloading malicious files by doing something as simple as clicking on a web link.

"When the user clicked that link, the malicious script would run on the user's computer for the rest of the current Internet Explorer session," wrote Microsoft representative Angela Gunn in a website announcement accompanying the advisory.

Once the computer had been hijacked, hackers could use it to steal personal data or send users to fake websites, she added.

"Such a script might collect user information, e.g e-mail, spoof content displayed in the browser or otherwise interfere with the user's experience."

Although Microsoft said it had seen no evidence that the glitch had already been exploited by hackers, it warned that research had shown it was a serious threat.

And while it has not been able to remove the bug itself, it issued a "fix it" security patch to block any attempts to use it.

All Windows users - particularly those who use Internet Explorer - are being urged to download the fix while the company's security team develop a way to plug the hole permanently.

I read about this, and actually spoke to one guy who was exploiting it himself.

Its a massive error that could potentially hard millions of people, but the likely hood of you being hijacked is minimal.

Be sure to use the trusty old windows update and install all the updates for IE.

I was only speaking with my brother-in-law about this this morning, he's just had to fix a friends PC because something like this took over the whole thing, the only thing he could access was IE, no safe mode or bios, nothing would work. It took 2 days to get access to the system and registry files that needed to be fixed. Apparently it was a key logger type waiting for password and account details. 😡

Does any one know which version of IE this applies to? Anyway I mostly use firefox which is good that it won't apply those people i think?

This is why I stopped using IE, for this reason. I'm actually using Opera now, and I kind of like it.

This sounds like a dangerous exploit. I wonder how many people know about this exploit and the patch to fix the problem.

I agree, this does sound dangerous.

I never use IE except at work cause I have to, not because I want to.

No one is mad at you for doing so. Sometimes using a certain browser can't be helped. I know if I were to still be in school right now, I'd probably have no choice but to use IE as well as that's what the school probably still has installed on their computers, yet my personal preference has been Opera lately. Might give Safari a test drive one day as well, although I'm starting to get the hang of Opera.

I'm not surprised, really. Usually when it's something this serious it's enough to get anybody concerned right away.

IE 9.

Their most recent updated version, it had countless exploits listed all over the web.

This is another reason why everyone should just use Firefox.

To be Honest Microsoft are F***** A**H**** because all they care about is money and getting a good spot on the market. They take shortcuts to get their products on the shelf and fix all the mess they made in the first place later.

Wouldn't call people stupid for using IE, or any other browser. It's their choice, they can do as they wish. Have you used IE 9, Cloverfield? It renders HTML 5 superbly and is a really quick and nimble browser. All software can have its' flaws and it just so happens it's mainly Microsoft due to the sheer popularity of their system and products. I - for one - am grateful they are normally on top of issues that arise, and they respond to reports fairly quickly.

I'm not defending previous versions of IE by the way. They were horrible, insecure and forced web developers to build to it alone as well as norm standards.

Which is why you shouldn't use IE. Join us in the 21st Century, use FireFox, Opera, Chrome, or really anything except IE.
Fixed.
