Warning to anybody who downloaded the FA custom theme.

I've just been notified that my custom ForumAdvertiser theme has been made available for public download.

Well, i've gotten messages from several people with the link, telling me to check it out. I don't think anyone has any really negative intents (like selling it or something), but it wouldn't surprise me if several people have a copy somewhere on a live preview.

I can't give you the names of course, but let's just say everyone from FP upper management to others that are banned from FP, to people who don't even know what FP is.

If I catch anybody reselling it, modifying it, or using it on their own forum, I will use legal action against you to shut down your site. I will contact your host and file a DMCA copyright infringement, and you will be forced to take it down. You are NOT allowed to use a custom theme that belongs to somebody without their written permission. If you've already downloaded the theme, just delete it, and you won't have to worry about anything.

Yes, I am tremendously furious about this, because I paid for this theme with my own money looking to get a unique custom skin for my site, and now I've just realized that tons of people have it.
 
how did these people get the theme in the first place?

It was my fault. I forgot to delete the .zip file. I was just surprised to see that people found the link to download it, as I haven't even launched the site yet.

But yes, so that it's not repeated over and over, I have learned a lesson the hard way. I will now always remember to delete .zip files after uploading them.

Strange.

Looks like we should expect this sort of stuff. I wouldn't have even thought this possible for a forum that's not even out yet. :O
 
Sounds like an inside job to me. do you trust your host?
 
Ya , I think your host definitely has some role to play in this . Otherwise how would people even know about that when your forum's still not launched !

Sorry to hear this happened, it must be a great theme if tons of people were taking it.

Sorry to hear this, Shotgun. I would be Poed as well if someone did this to a theme that I had spent hours working on. I'm not even good with graphics, so I can't say I've ever tried it... but I hope it all works out for you.
 
I'd be pissed off as well but I wouldnt go publicly threatening people on a public forum such as this one. The amount of bootleg skins available to people on the internet is vast. The skins I have for my vB forum could be found by doing a torrent search. Sometimes I wonder who has legit skins and who has bootlegs. To those who do have the bootlegs, I doubt anything happens to them.
 
As someone who designs her own custom skins too I totally understand why you're so angry. I'd be sooo pissed off if this happened to me!

These things take WEEKS of daily work putting hours in to design.

Who did you pay to design it for you?

Is there any chance that they gave copies of the theme to other people?

Was the person who warned you about the theme being used by others, the same person who designed it, or friendly with the person who designed it?

If they are warning you about theft, and know who is involved, why won't they give the names? Why would they want to protect thieves?

That reference sounds like a deliberate slur on FP. If they are referring to Admins, there are only four of us, ask them for a name.

Overall that PM has an air of familiarity to it, accusing people without proof and without giving names. Doesn't that just seem a little suspicious to you? Have you considered the real motivation of whoever sent you that PM?

Obviously I know very little of the circumstances and it is quite likely that I'm barking up the wrong tree.
 
There are several sites out there where you can report rippers if you do identify the party responsible. It may not provide an immediate solution, but I always do encourage making the offenders public as much as possible.

I don't want to be listing the URLs of those sites as I am not clear as to the policy here, but a quick google search will show you.
 
I'll have the b*****ks to admit in public that I was one of the people who downloaded the theme, though as Shotgun said it was his own fault for keeping the zip files and not deleting them.

Saying this, I had no malicious intent when I downloaded the style and just wanted to get a preview of it, and I apologised to Shotgun.

Nope, it was in the /styles directory, found it through that 😛
