Every popular website gathers a lot of members over the years, but unfortunately, some of them leave during a certain stage of the forum's growth and they never return. What are some unique ways that you think could help bring back some of the veteran users of a forum? 🙂

Maybe try to contact them directly? With old members usually we are closer than before, and may already have personal contacts or are friends in other social media. I think personal approach will work best in such case.

I've thought of that before, but I'm unsure how you would go about that. If you say that things are different now, and they come back to find that things are the same as when they left, you might just lose them forever. There's usually a specific reason why they left, and it's not always so clear.

Hopefully they're easy to contact as well. I've found that after a few years, usually people don't check the same email or accounts that they used it, and so it's hard to just PM them or even send out an email!

I agree with the mass contact media. Mass emailing, private messaging, or tweeting has worked for me. Or posting an announcement on that forum/blog because you would be surprised how many people check in on an old site just to see if anythings new or has changed.

True. I guess we need to avoid saying that things are different, but at least we are trying to change the situation and improve the forum, and need help or input on it. Maybe that will make them more interested. Old members usually have special attachment to the forum so they may be interested to hear out more.

Not always, I still use the same e-mails I made when I first entered this internet world like 7-8 years ago. XD But still very possible to happen, and is definitely an obstacle to our recovery attempt. That's why social media like Twitter, Skype, or Facebook may be more dependable in this kind of situation.

I find that it's very difficult to get members back unless you've had close relations with them before. I've made a couple of attempts to revive my old creative arts forum but even after reaching out they eventually lose interest all over again. Life just happens sometimes and I've accepted that it may not be reasonable to expect former members to come back.

You should login to the ACP ( Admin Control Panel). Find out there email address and email them.

I'd send out a newsletter or something and they might get interested again if they see a lot of new stuff
Do people actually read these? Most of the time, I end up putting them straight in the round file, haha. 😛

You guys bring up some good points though; definitely some good ideas to try!

Hmm, good point 😀
Yeah, I don't really read those
I think they go directly to my spam folder

Perhaps it's about my setting, but forum/website newsletters still land on my inbox instead of spam box. That's how I can still catch up with what's happening in various places. And numerous times they brought me back to the forum/website.

I'd say don't give up too fast. 😛

I usually send out newsletters. They are open ignored, but I say that if they come back and post ten more posts within the next week, they get entered into a cash prize.
