What are some good way to gain active members? I know everyone says be different, do what other forums don't, or something along those lines. How should it be different? Name a few ideas. I've had my forum open since sometime in January. We have about 1,500 posts and 85 members. However, most of the members that have posted are from FP because we did an exchange. Tips? Ideas?

Promote everywhere possible, I have mentioned this two times now, but promote on every forum possible, whether it be a fod forum, sport's forum, graphics forum ask for an admins permission to advertise, by then you would have gained some members after every day of hardcore promoting, now how to keep them active is ask them what interest's the community, is it a community, daily news threads, just question them what they like and evantually you may gain active members. If that doesn't work then you may need to pull the triggers and call in hardcore promoter team who are active, keep you up to date, post 100 threads daily and promote everywhere(I dont think this sentence makes sense).

Get up there on Google for your forum's topic. But that's not all. Be sure that once you do get up there, you already have a forum that looks great and convinces people to sign right up 🙂

These two things will do it for just about anyone.

I can assure you that you won't get many long term, dedicated members from FP. Look at gaming forums, make a few posts and be friendly. Place your link in your signature and profile, and really, hope.

1. Offer additional features, that no other forum has. I see you have no features of such.

2. Do you offer original idea/content?

3. Person will judge your website on first 3 seconds they are on the website, and the topic icons "old" defiantly tell the user that this forum is dead. Change them.

4. Always have some active members, your friends, family members, whoever... so wen users look at your site they see activity, not just join and be only one active.

Well my forum is decently active and this is how I did it and got so many posts in such a short time well. 😛

1) Promote my forum like crazy on other forums request services, etc.
2) Request loads of posting packages like here on FP and other promotion forums. (5 to be exact that I know of I request off of..)
3) Get suggestions from other members or some here on FP to improve my forum to keep my members and get them to stay active and started a contest! 🙂

Do something different from what everyone else is doing. I don't really see anything unique about the forums you have or what you offer. It might take some brainstorming, but it is possible to do something that isn't as common, but that members would enjoy (such as a custom-coded game). Since it's graphics, why not a coded RPG that has mini graphic challenges built into it?

A ZB RPG code: http://support.zetaboards.com/topic/259642/1/

Promote here. Get some contests and also you can give some special access to active members.

I believe it's best to promote and advertise your forum as much as possible. Almost, create contests which attract people and ice prices ofcrouse.

One way to get and keep members is to keep the content fresh. To do this you may have to do your research. For example, if you had a baseball forum, and last night there was a mets game, be sure to watch the game and have either an open discussion ready on your forum within the next 24 - 72 hours about that specific game. If needed reference a little from a news article if you have to. This shows your member base that you are into the topic you have your forum about and will keep coming back for the "next edition" of what you have to say.

I hope this helps,
Andy...

The thing with all these ideas is unless you have a major site that would lead to your forum (think SomethingAwful Forums have SomethingAwful, Cracked Forums have Cracked, etc.) you aren't going to get a whole lot of traffic. You are faced with the idea that the second you make your board though phBB or whatever their little slogans "Build a community" almost lures you into believing that withing the first hours your forum will boost to the skies and get sudden influxes of members. This never happens, you have to work to get people to your forum and you have to make your little free forum interesting, make it multi-content based; Art, News, General Discussion, Humor, Review, Debate, do whatever, but more important than that you want to build a solid and comfortable userbase, don't have yourself and the same two posters babbling on about the same things you've discussed since January, And if that doesn't work... I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but sometimes if you just don't have the wood to build the house; you just can't build the house.
