In the news last night was the attack of Wcry Ransomware in Europe and other parts of the world. The scheme is to lock the files with encryption and the user or owner of the computer is asked to pay a ransom in bitcoins so he would be sent the decription key and remove the malware. I think it is not a new malware that Microsoft had already controlled in their updates. But nevertheless, that news was a good reminder for us users to be wary of new viruses.

True.
Word came out that it's a rippoff of a different malware/worm called ETERNALBLUE, and it mostly infected computers with Windows XP, which in this case was many public service computers, in ministries, hospitals, companies that neglected to update their OS, etc.
In some cases the infection somehow disappeared and the files were de-crypted automatically, without the infected paying any ransom at all, so there's also a theory that this ransomware runs on a timer.

And one man was hired by the government agencies because he 'accidentally' contained the attack.

It is always best to protect your computers with the latest updated Antivirus. Also everyone should be aware of the spam emails that advertise great lotteries and prizes. Never disclose or send out personal information to unknown emails and avoid clicking on unknown link sources.
