On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes and at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools. RIP Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase and Billy Lucas. You are loved.
Join this event and tell everyone on your friends list. Don't let their deaths be for nothing. Let it mean something, and let's do something to change this country for once.
Thanks for posting that Chris, it has been shocking to see so many suicides based on sexual orientation recently and it needs more attention, especially here in the UK.
I did wear purple today for this exact reason. Its horrible to think that these people had to go to such extreme measures to escape from the idiots who let the unknown and fear of it cloud their vision. There was no reason for them to bully these guys. I have to say where I live in the UK, there isn't much homophobia, but there is still the occassional jibe, which really annoys me. Thankfully none of this extent, because maybe me and a few other people might have also taken the same path they did =/ I hope this brings to light more on the situation people are going through and that in the end at least something more can be done and not ignored as was the case by the schools in those particular cases.
