The "system" you will be using is the forum software. This is independent of the webhost. Some free forum softwares available are phpBB, Mybb, SMF and Vanilla. Out of those, I would recommend Mybb as it is well supported, updated and has a lot of functionality.

If you are wanting to keep your posts then you will need to obtain your database from Proboards (which they don't appear to allow you to do). What they seem to have is this: http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/show ... ostcount=7. You will need to convert the CSV format to MySql SQL format and then run that in phpmyadmin. You might be able to do this online with a converter: http://csv2sql.com/.

There are a few hosting providers on FP (including HolderHost which is co-owned by myself and Plato a.k.a xpl0iter). You might be able to get a trial or a 1 cent month so that you can try out the host.

Some things you may want to consider when picking a host are:

- What control panel they use. cPanel is industry standard but others you may see are zPanel, Plesk and Directadmin. cPanel is - in my opinion- the most user friendly and feature rich control panel.
- Does the host take backups and if so how often. You should always take your own backups but it is nice to know your host has a copy of your site as well.
- Uptime. Site uptime is pretty important. Unfortunately the only way you will find out true uptime is by having your website with the host.
- Server speed. You want a fast loading website- again you will only really find out how fast the hosts server is by trying their service.
- Financials. Choosing a profitable host or one that is backed by a couple of people is a plus. You don't want them to close down on you!
- Age of the host.

Hope that all helps.

Sam 🙂

Ok then- let's try again 🙂

If you want to move off proboards then you are going to need to choose a software to move to (Mybb, phpBB etc.). ForumPromotion runs Phpbb. The software will have an admin panel which you can use to administer your forum.

The database is where site configuration details, posts, user information etc. is stored. In order to move to a new platform (while keeping your posts) you need to be able to access this database and download a copy. Unfortunately ProBoards does not allow you to do this. That makes it harder. You can get a CSV format of the database and convert it to SQL for your new forum (although user passwords and such will be missing).

You then need a webhost and I listed some factors that I would consider when choosing one.

If you have any specific questions- please ask! 🙂

I highly recommend Sam's company, HolderHost. 🙂
As you understand, he is very supportive and he is an expert. :great:

am i able to keep pbs while paying for a webhost

Yes- I don't see why not. I should have mentioned earlier -you will need a domain to connect to your webhost. A .com is preferable (Godaddy has $1.99 .coms here: http://x.co/3VY5M) but you can also use a free domain from freenom.com. 🙂

so how do i go about webhosting with pbs and what the benefits behind it

I'm sorry- I don't understand this.

PBS = ProBoards? Who you are already hosting with?

If you know a bit about Linux, I use a VPS from RamNode ( http://ramnode.com ). You can get an un-managed, 120GB HDD OpenVZ VPS in either Atlanta, Seattle, or Amsterdam for $4.80 a month approx. with the coupon "LEB35", without quotes.

I like them, but since it's un-managed you should know how to run Linux if getting a VPS from them.

I dont understand

My question is what the benefits of a webhost thn running a regular free forum
