What are your views on web hosting sites that offer free packages, unlimited features etc?

I think they are pretty crap and have never once used a free web host. I have seen peoples dreams get shattered because of these types of hosts. Ive been using web hosting for about 5 years now and seen people create websites, forums, blogs etc.. and after about 6 months of time and effort the site just disappears or the owner ups and leaves.

No site what so every can offer or even give "Unlimited Web space, Bandwidth etc.." as they dont exsit. These are just to try and trick members of the public in to getting the hosting. So in a way a scam. But i bet your thinking "Oh its because i cant afford hosting" Well if you cant afford hosting dont try and create a website you will suffer at the end of it.

With free hosts also, because you think "oh its free ill take it" just wonder how many other people have thought "Oh free web hosting" So all them people are on the same server and your site will take longer to load etc...

Free hosts also have fees some where lying in the dark shadows of the website, I know of a few websites that charge you to move to a paid host, or charge you because you have gone over your "Unlimited features" Yes because you went over your Unlimited Features. See theres limits.

So take some advice and stay away from websites that offer Unlimited or free web hosting.

Had problems with free hosts in the past, will definitely always use paid hosting in the future.

I've used free hosts before, I personally have has no problem. Good support and online most of the time?

I really like free webhost like webhostingfox. The downside it to many free host there is many long downtimes and most of the time you have to put ads on your site. But they do over some great deal. Well I think another alternative to free hosting is using a post to host, where the user post on the host forum and get hosting in return.

My views on unlimited hosting its a big fat lie. No host provider can offer unlimited bandwidth or disk space. They tell use the same old crap "unlimited hosting subject to fair usage" what fair usage? so how it that unlimited. Many people fork out there hard earning on unlimited hosting but its not unlimited and most of the time most of the time there using like 5GB of disk space and like 20gb of bandwidth a month

I have to agree there is no such thing as unlimited hosting. The hosting may be un-restricted but that doesn't mean your "unlimited and free from limits" of course you have to pick a good reliable host. Some hosting sites that do offer unlimited hosting restricts it and that is because they don't want to run out of there limits.
I understand there are lots of hosts out there and they all seem reliable but the truth is a good bunch of them are not. One thing I learned in my hosting experience is do lots of reviews before you pick someone. If you don't you may see your site shut down because they are an unreliable host or unstable host.

For paid hosting, I recommend BounceWeb, DreamHost or Servage.

For free hosting, I wouldn't recommend it unless it's secure and not scummy, as I know their were times when I was with a hosting ad-free crowd, then they loaded their sites up with ads. Horrible and good-bye visitors.

EDIT: Nothing beats running a server off your home internet connection. I do this for my own website (mind you, I have 1.5Mbps ADSL). You then have full control over everything you do on the server. Unless you have dialup, which would not be ideal for website hosting.

Just because it says "unlimited", it doesn't mean its a bad host. As an example, just look at the top right hand corner of the forum. Frog Host has unlimited hosting, but its actually a subset of HawkHost, which is a reliable host.

I go for hosts that have tighter restrictions as this forces users who have massive scripted sites to either find another host or tone down on processes. Also means they don't oversell too, the pet hate for website owners.

This is also true. Unlimited doesn't mean it's a bad host.. Some hosts are reliable with unlimited hosting (even though it's not unlimited) I've seen some reliable hosts that says they will upgrade their servers if they ever run out of storage.

I use GoDaddy. They are not the best price or offer the most features but the one thing they have been for me is reliable. I've yet to hit up my site and have it down so if it's ever been down they were lucky and crashed when I was sleeping 🙂

People also miss the fact that just because one says he/she has had a bad experience, doesn't mean you will too. Unlimited hosts may or may not work out for you, just like hosts that seem reliable etc.
