Website with Profiles, Member Pages etc.

I am a complete noob to this, but how do I make a website where users can sign up, customise their profile and create pages? Not quite social networking, and it's a little hard to explain, but if you can grab the gist of what I'm trying to say then I would appreciate some help.

What do you mean by create pages?

Not pages as such, but create a list of items, which they can later come back to and tick off (like a to-do list).

more technical term if you wanna know how it is completed actually done is they use PHP coding to accomplish the task. If you were really wondering 🙂
