Websites with WWW

Hey everyone! I was just curious as to how many of you opted to using www as part of the url, or conversely if you didn't, and why?

I personally went with the www purely because I liked the look of it, but I have no other reasons aside from that.

You really have two choices to pick, http:// or https://

I didn't conciously leave the www out of my url. Most people I know don't type the www anyway, so it doesn't really matter anyway so I left it as it was :')

I redirect www to the domain without. I think it was a cute gimmick in the early web, basically meaning world wide web, but it's a little superfluous these days.

YouTube uses it though. And if your choice is HTTPS or HTTP, as mentioned by @Empire, then it should definitely be HTTPS, some modern browser features won't work without it and HTTP/2 can really help in speeding things up.

Oh no, they won't disable HTTP sites.

But, they will make it as painful as possible to run a HTTP site with less functionality, a big ugly "Not Secure" label in the URL bar (getting switched on next month), and worse search rankings.

There's no any difference between having www and no www. However, in the users' views, websites having www looks nicer than others. IMO. I personally didn't use www on my sites.

I'm also confused sometimes with the www prefix. But I guess it's not mandatory to use it. Even the http and https prefix which is not easy to type are also negligible. My habit now is to just type the website address sans the prefix. The browser will handle the prefix for me.

Me too, I usually type just the domain name in browser address bar, example my blog, I just type "ecoupon.io", the protocol htttp is added automatically by the browser and it's redirected to https for me.

I know many people have already covered this but the "www." bit isn't optional as such. What I mean is that you can have a subdomain that is like... I don't know... design.jack.com for example.

For design reasons a lot of designers on Business Cards will have it removed as that is modern design and let's face it if you can reduce the text then you'll do that. but it is down to personal preference.

what @Empire is saying what you want to have is a https:// domain which means the website is secure. Banks will have these. but you can register I think to get your own.

We're not talking about that. That too, is considered "different URL's."

I have this habit of using "www." Eventually, I'll stop doing the habit, but right now... that's just how I feel.

This is not true. If you're a website owner, and you have a search console account, they send you notices telling you Chrome will send warnings about non-https. Likewise, they're now ranking https websites better than non-https. Google is making modification to their algorithm to make sure that this is enforced. Not right away, but little by little.

I've already seen this myself.
