I'm in the midst of setting up a weekly "digest" that'll contain new threads and threads that have had recent replies. This email is set to go out only to members that have been active in the last 5 months. It is also very easy to opt out.

What thoughts do you all have to share on this?

An easy way to get your IP blacklisted. But a lot of admins do this. Probably through a 3rd party service.

That sounds like a good idea. But make sure it's easy to opt-out or maybe just send it to users that have actively signed up for it. And like @meetdilip said, try and use a third-party service. Good luck and let us know how it goes! 😊

Yes, the newsletter needs to add actual value to the user. And make sure that only users that are interested and have signed up for it will receive it.

Well, Sites like my end can disable the option so that users are forced to get emails 🙂 however, most of them use an email address that they use for spam and joining sites with. That's why I do not send newsletters and also I have nothing to say

Yeah, and that's why it could be a good idea to separate the newsletter from the actual sign up process. Maybe add a newsletter sign-up form on the website that people can use or on the registration page where it is clear what the newsletter is about.

Discourse has this feature. From what I have seen it is opt-out during registration. By default, you will receive emails.

From what I've seen the opt-out process is pretty easy. Including and not limited to even contacting me if they want.

It is possible that the boards that I visit do this. Not necessarily a Discourse software default.

I think opt in would be preferable to opt out. I’ve stopped using forums before that spam my email.

I would ask people if they'd like to receive them. I figure if they wanted info on topics in my forum, they'd GO to my forum! You could also do a poll & ask your members what they would like!
