Weird noise

Hi,

A friend brought his computer to me the other day saying it was making a weird noise from time to time. I thought it was the click of death, but it sounds slightly different. As he still has access to windows and all his files, we took a full backup.

I have recorded the sound here. It started when he was watching youtube and has slowed his PC down considerably.

Sounds like a cord hitting a fan blade. When I built my new PC I accidently forgot to tie one of the cords to another one to keep it away from the fan blade and it made a similar sound, but a bit faster. Either that or it is the HDD. The last thing I could think of it could be the video card. Does your friend have a video card in it? Also what kind of video card is it?

I apologise for not replying earlier.

It was the HDD. The acuator arm was jumping and the mechanism inside the acuator had failed. Therefore it eventually could no longer read the data on the disk. There was just enough time to take a few back ups, and in the end it was cheaper to replace the HDD with a newer one, than replace the arm and acuator.

That's a weird sound, sounds more familiar to the wires touching with the processor fan. But you state something different. If its the Hard disk sound then its in a very bad state. Its good that you have all your backup taken on time.

Oh what fun, I honestly never thought a HDD could even make noise. 😛 Glad you got it figured out though! 🙂
