When a new member signs up on your forum, do you welcome them with an automated PM? If you do, what things do you have in it and what would you avoid adding?

I don't bother, I find it largely annoying on sites I visit, so I don't really want to bother users with it either.

Most members don't even read them anyway but it's an option. Meaning you can add the site rules and helpline

I send them an automated welcome email with their username, and some useful links to get started.

I don't think this type of thing is all that necessary on every forum, but there's nothing wrong with starting things off with a friendly welcome PM. We send out an automated welcome PM to our new members, and it just links to various important topics and forums that we feel the new member will want to check out. I do feel like 90% of individuals probably don't even read the PM though. 😛

Same here anyway. I have an system that sends Welcome PMs and emails to the new users. I have no idea if they read them but it's there.

At Christianity Haven we do an automated Visitors Message and I wanted to do a PM but maybe getting my Community FAQ in order would be a better way to go.

I think they are completely useless. I never read them when joining forums as I can navigate just fine.

As welcoming as it is to be greeted by a robot (it’s not), I have to say I would avoid sending them altogether.

I do not like seeing them when I join a website as it is automated and not at all authentic. I can appreciate how they may be useful but I tend to just skip them altogether. Been around the business long enough to know how a forum works and its useful features. 🙂

What if you get emails instant of PMs and or topics, would you not minded a welcoming email

I don't have email confirmation, welcome email or welcome PM. I don't want people being bamboozled with notifications upon joining. I find it personally annoying and I tend to spam the emails and ignore PMs.

Agee, USed to have that option but disabled it

I have a Welcome PM. I’ve edited it a few times. Pretty much Welcoming them personally, make yourself at home, directing them to the Rules & Admin Updates to familiarize themselves. But my main focus is welcoming each member on the forum as they come in, unless of course they start the thread themselves 🙂

I use Welcome PM's to introduce our verification program and badges, and give them the link to the community rules. I've received a few replies to them but overall, I don't think they're totally useless. Some of them do read it and use it - and others don't. Better to have it than not, imo.
