What Are Forum Spiders?

They're bots like Google who crawl around your forum and record posts and that such stuff for their own information.

Search up my forum, Unofficial Rock Band Forums, on Google as an example. All of that was done by crawling.

I doubt it. It's not really advertising, it's just they'll use your site's data for search engines and that such. They aren't a threat in any way.

Its not really about giving permission, its more restricting permission. You wouldn't want a spider in your admin panel, right? Or some protected files etc.

In forums systems such as PhpBB3 you are able to tell PhpBB3 what bit's of your forums you want the bots like Google to see 🙂
