I want to set up a site. No, not an unplanned project, shit, or promotion site.

I've been with SigSports for about two years and things fell out. The staff was dissolved and not needed anymore. I'm ready to start my own venture and have little experience with starting from scratch. I've only worked (with the best) on a staff of established sites (two).

I know everthing about promoting a site, running a community, etc. But not a lot on getting started. I will be using a WP for a main page which I should be fine with setting up but a forum is something I'm cautious with.

I've been using IPB for about three years. I love the software and am familliar with it. I simply do not have the money right now to dish out for a license for IPB or vB. On a previous board I paid a guy (who owns SigSports) to host an IPB forum. I'm not really sure how this works but I would pay and he would host it. What are the details on doing this and what other similar choices do I have?

Also any other suggestions.

Hey...

If I was you I'd get a free hosting account and play around with free forum software, learn how to use each and see what fits best for you. Look up tuts and such how to customise the forum software to really make it stand out...

Good luck man. 🙂

Yeah, I just don't think free forum software can do what I'll want to do.

Well, if you want total control over your own forum, advanced hosting is definetly the way to go. If I were you, I'd do a free advanced hosting site if you're not familiar with Cpanel, then you can play around with different things in the Cpanel and find out how they work and stuff like that... then find out what you want to do from the experiments.

Actually free forum software is better than paid forum software. MyBB is a better version than Vbulletin. SMF is better than IPB... as well as being more secured. 🙂

Did you mean to respond to this, or were you quoting what I said as in agreeing with me?

I agree. Free forum software is the best way to go. Especially since VB and IPB can become expensive in the long haul.

You can buy a used vBulletin license for $40 or so 😛

As for starting a site... you should know what genre you want to start a site in rather than asking people what genre you should do... you know yourself better then any in this topic will know you.

Uhmm what lol? I am sorry but paid software is still way ahead in to many levels. Anyways @op what is it you think the free forums might not be able to do?

You what? Come on give me something decent paid forum software can do that a free forum software can't...

A huuuuge amount of options, modifications, further developed permissions, AJAX features, features in general (social groups, etc.) vBulletin is more advanced than MyBB but MyBB can be the correct solutions for sites that don't require essentially a complete social networking script.

Keith if you're wanting to experiment with software you can try the demos out here - http://www.forum-software.org/live-forum-demonstrations

Suit to your liking. Once you're familiar, go wild and create your own site with good (paid is best option) hosting about whatever the heck you like with the software you like

lol... There are the same amount of mods for MyBB that there are for Vbulletin, well for what they do, not as a count. MyBB has the same features as Vbulletin and can match VB exacly with the right mods and can even beat VB. MyBB also does have facebook intergration and such, I've seen it before.
You say VB is more "advanced" than MyBB but then again MyBB is more secure. 😉

I don't even try to begin on how misinformed you are, sorry but do your research. There are many, many more quality mods for vBulletin than MyBB. If you installed all mods on vB (let's forget server load) and all mods on MyBB, vB would come on top by miles on features. No question, have you ever browsed vBulletin.org? Tell me vBulletin doesn't have many mods.

Also vBulletin is very secure, we hear about vB security problems more than MyBB ones because vB is paid software & many more people use it, but at the end of the day the security issues are probably similar, but I don't know that much about that. Can't really diss MyBB on security, it does that well

However vBulletin is a big package, you get what you pay for. It's way beyond MyBB.

XD sorry my reasurch is up to date... there are more mods for vbulletin but there are MILLIONS of copies... they all do the same thing and they match MyBB in features... it wouldn't come in top, it would come in close... and ok let's include server load, you'll be able to have more mods on MyBB than on VB... VB is a resource hog... mates forum is VB, 200,000 posts NEEDS a 4GB ram VPS.

All you hear is VB is the most secure, VB is amazing from having a salted MD5 DB which is hard to crack... but infact... there are more exploits... I know this for a fact. This is my area, MyBB is a good 7 times more secure...

Also this is offtopic. 😛

My only work of advice is to shun the common knowledge. People here think they know everything, but really, none of them actually owns anything half successful. Look at credentials before you take anything to be the best way to do anything. I'd have to say that, when promoting, you have to know your audience and how to draw them in. Furthermore, you need to find them too. Also, it seems most successful forum were formed around something more than just one child person, such as a product or a group of friends.

keithsigsports the forum software you use is not going to be the main factor in whether or not your forum is successful, within reason of course. There are very successful forums running on each of the major forum software platforms.

However, if you are familiar with IPB it would make administering the forum much easier for you. Would a hosted community from IPB work for you? They start at $9.99 a month and you don't have to pay an upfront fee to purchase the licence.

$9.99 is a lot of money per month with the mass restrictions that they have. You have a 10 user limit, with the admin that gives you 9 users that are allowed to be online, say one staff member, that is an 8 user limit... for $9.99... Your better off purchasing a licence and gaining a VPS, it will be a lot cheaper.

for the forum to decently go with a user limit he'd either need the $19.99 plan (25 users online at any one given time) or $29.99 plan (40 users online at any one given time).

In the long run, it'd be cheaper to buy the license and use $5 /month hosting.
