With some forums, guests can browse all pages, access almost every feature that a signed in member would. But, when you give away all content, the guest might not have any reason to register or even post. What are some of the things you reserve to forum members only that might actually entice a guest to make the leap from merely browsing the forum to taking time to register and post?

I don't really have many benefits apart from posting however I have signed up on forums I don't post on to gain access to links and downloads which would be a great way of getting members.

At the moment, none, but when I do get my forum up and running, there will be things there that the only way to take advantage of it, is to register and request the ability to use it.

The advantage of registering at my forum is the unique opportunity to interact with all the fine people there.

There are some forums, where the users are actually great people to associate with, only if some people would sign up to learn that!

-interact and engage with people with similar interests (plenty of discussions available!)
-Enjoy a lovely dark theme
-set 2 nintendo characters as your faves to be displayed in your profile
-acquire post ranks which change every 50 posts

Basically this. I allow guests to browse freely. The only hidden area is our supporters lounge.

Edit: Removed, I got two tabs mixed up.

As for benefits of registering... well, guides, music downloads, blogs to write/read, quizzes, the members and community in general. And that's just on my main site.

You restrict an IP address to a no. of free visits minimum 15-20. After that it is safe to assume that he is hooked and then he definitely will register. Some of the forums do follow this technique. But restricting some part of the forum is the most effective strategy.

When my forum was still around, to be honest... Nothing. Guests were able to directly view the main features of the forum: news and info about the singer, her discography (without any download links), lyrics and its translations, articles and its translations, photos, and videos. We only did so with the hope that those who find them helpful would join and say something to color the community up, haha. I also thought since with lyrics translation or photos, they can already be found at other websites out there so there was no use to disable guest viewing for that content.

And ultimately, this.

A good forum is a forum that people will want to contribute to. How will they sign up in order to contribute IF they can't see any content?
Being too cagey with content is not productive.
If the forum is strong, people will not be content just to read and browse. They will want to be a part of it!
