We all know how great forums are, but what are some of the bad things?

As Boost said it is correct. Every phone has an social media application to chat with newers and they are interested in them than forums.

We think forums are better than social media groups, but they think social media group is better than any other website.

I have to agree with @Boost too. Forums ARE slower but before the internet, communication WAS slow. Now, people expect everything to happen now & they get impatient when it doesn't happen.
However, that to me is not a bad thing in its own way.
One thing that "can" be bad is when a forum owner & Staff get on their high horse & treat their forum like a dictatorship.

A lot of forums are trying to compete with social media, however, they don't understand forums are not social media, they are more of discussion communities.

They die far too easily, I've rarely seen one get any attention after three to five months.

I think the worst thing about forums is bloat. They need to be developed with lighter development. Too many developers want to make a forum act more like a blog or a website when they need to just act like forums. A forum these days is as big as a full CMS if not bigger. There really is no reason for that.

The only bad thing I can think of with forums is that they are quite slow to respond when it comes to wanting replies on posts or threads. On social media and on places like Discord as well the interaction is usually in real time but with forums, you sometimes have to wait a while for a response to a post or thread you made.

I think forum is still slow to compare to other social media. There are people that don't know about forums especially great writers and there's no awareness abou it to them.

People talk about the fact that forums are slower, but they aren't as slow as they once were now. You've got instant notifications if you allow notifications for replies, and reactions. Also most forum software these days have PWA so you can have multiple apps for the forums you frequent. The only bad thing I would say about forums are that they tend to die quick if the owner stops posting and updating the forum, but that's more on the staff running the forum and not forums in general.

Forums are awesome for building communities, but they’re not without their challenges. One of the biggest issues is keeping engagement high—people join, but getting them to stick around and actively participate can be tough. Then there’s moderation; spam, trolls, and drama are inevitable in any online space, and dealing with them can be exhausting.

Another thing is how easily forums can feel “dead” if there’s not enough activity. Too many sections with too few posts can make the place seem empty, which might turn people away before they even give it a chance.

In the past, we didn't have any PWA's apps and we didn't rank highly on the search engines either, but we do now. Especially once Google partnered up with Reddit, it gave a boast for a lot of forums. I do think we'll see a slight rise of forums in the near future, especially with AI-bots being rolled out in social media and other things.

You think AI bots in social media will bring more users back to forums?

Forums can suffer from spam, low activity, or toxic behavior if not moderated well. They may become cluttered, confusing, or slow over time.
