Hi,

I'm looking to release some of my private MyBB work that I'm not using any more into the public domain. 🙂

Are there any "go-to" sites for MyBB that are particularly popular? For example, for phpBB there is awesomestyles.com, phpBBstyles.net and the official database of course .

I know that AwesomeStyles accepts MyBB submissions, however the site seems riddled with bugs and horrifically buried in Ads. It would be nice to list at a small number of larger well-established sites than a dozen tiny sites.

Recommendations?

Thanks 🙂

MyBB mods database is probably the only place i can suggest.

Re: What are the recommended sites for releasing MyBB themes

I would say the MyBB forum, they have a section dedicated to themes and and MODS, unlike phpBB.com I don't think there is any verification by MyBB ( poor in my book) the norm seems that you have to leave a support link in the download.

MyBB does verifies plugin/theme submissions before they are available for download.

You don't have to. People leave a support link so that they can assist their plugin/theme users better. But its not mandatory.

Several I have tried to use do not work, some of the instructions are written in very poor English and are very difficult for a noob to understand.
Most do not have have any instructions on how to use the MOD or what it actually does.
Some don't even include English language packs:
eg:

http://mods.mybb.com/view/complete-remo ... pied-forum

http://mods.mybb.com/view/add-current-t ... of-forums-

Description

Return back to page that you were visiting after you login/logout from header.

Features

- Redirect to page that you were visiting after you login/logout.

This is a BETA version

Installation:

For the installation you must load the file autoredirect.php in /inc and activate it from the acp.

And.... Done!!!

Upgrade:

Deactivate the plugin. Delete the file autoredirect.php from /inc and load the file autoredirect.php in /inc and activate it from the acp.

And.... Done!!!

Next version?

- Set the time of the redirect.

Have fun!

These are just three, the whole section is riddled with spelling mistakes, poor instructions and poor grammar.
I appreciate that some of the people writing these MODs are not English, and that English may not even be their second language, but it is up to those verifying the MODS to ensure they work properly and have the correct instructions.

Some of the themes, even with English language packs still have bits that are not translated.

So how can anyone say that these are verified ?

Re: What are the recommended sites for releasing MyBB themes

@Sapper:

They are verified for bugs, security holes, etc. But it won't be possible for the MyBB team to translate plugins submitted or to write good descriptions for plugins.

If a plugin is in a different language, all we can do is either avoid using it or ask someone to do it for them.

And some plugins don't work properly now as they are not updated to the current system. It won't be possible for MyBB team to check every plugin and themes everytime a new version of MyBB is release. But we can contribute to that by reporting any plugin that don't work.

Re: What are the recommended sites for releasing MyBB themes

All it needs is a simple submission template for the submitter to complete ie :

Version coded for:
Revisions :
Date submitted :
Install instructions :
How to use :

Is that so difficult to implement ? at least it would give users a clue as to which version it is most suitable for, and it would help weed out the outdated ones

Hmm. I guess you never submitted a resource in their database before.

Version coded for: -> Its a default option that authors should select the MyBB version for which the plugin/theme is submitted.

Revisions : -> They do have a changelog option.

Date submitted : -> They won't need authors to enter this. They store the date when plugin/theme is submitted and show the submitted date and last modified date in Mods database.

Install instructions :
How to use : -> The have a box called "Detailed information" where authors should enter all information about the plugin/theme.

Not Always it seems they are a little lax with the rules :

Example 1:

Example 2:
http://mods.mybb.com/view/alexa-pro-advanced-stats

Example 3:
One of the worst, the English/grammar is non sense

Example 4:

Compare these with any phpBB3 MOD from the official site, and you will see what I mean.

phpBB's plugin installation procedure is complex, so they will need to provide full installation procedure. But almost all MyBB plugin requires you to just upload the files and activate them in ACP.
So MyBB team doesn't care whether an installation procedure is provided with the plugin.

Also when a plugin author who is not good in english wants to submit a plugin, the most he can do is enter a title for the plugin and use the same as description. Almost all the times, the title says what the plugin is.

MyBB team can't reject a plugin just because it doesn't have a proper description and they can't write description for all.

Why not?

It's not unreasonable to expect an English description on an English support site of a software shipped in English?

I'm not going to argue with this anymore. As a plugin author myself, description is the last thing i would care about when i do a plugin. Its simply because i don't have a need that more people should use it (as i have nothing to gain from it, obviously). I share my work for free because i think the work i did in my free time might be useful to someone.
A title and couple of lines of description should be enough to understand what a plugin is. If you are not sure how the plugin works, give it a try on a test forum. By that way, you can figure out any plugin.

If a description isn't given, how are we supposed to know what it is supposed to do, most MyBB plugins assume a lot.
You may be one of the decent add on writers on there, however if you want me to use your plugins, then I would expect you to at least write a description of what it does and how to use it.
phpBB3 is good at doing just that, and fyi you can use AutoMod to install phpBB3 MODs now.

I'm looking for a targeted audience here really. Outside of the promotion and exchanges areas here, the forums seem largely dominated by staff members replying to each other.

Obviously that doesn't take into account guests lurking, but releasing themes here really doesn't have the reach I'm looking for unfortunately.

Re: What are the recommended sites for releasing MyBB themes

I meant here aswell as other sites. 🙂
