What charitable cause is most deserving of money?

Sometimes for some, or most people go ahead and help the needy right away instead of reaching to charities or some non-governmental organizations which are of no use at all. As a person who is concerned about the environment, I would say that any charity that is working towards that cause deserves it. It maybe intimidating for some to know how to pick the best charity, especially when there are thousands of worthy causes.
